"Is Anything Ever What It Seems" is a 67-minute one-character one-character play written by local Mike Hamill. "Early Frost", directed by Linda Martin, is a shorter play with an all-female cast about an old woman haunted by a long-dead friend. For the first time, the one-acts will play for a two-week run, in the Main Gallery of the Kimball Art Center. They premiere on Thursday, April 8. Previous one-acts have run only over one week. Ha mill's play is a unique production. The first week, Richard Scott is scheduled to star under Hamill's direction. direc-tion. The second week they will switch, with Scott directing direct-ing Hamill. (At this writing, however, it is possible Scott may be unable to act in the play.) The playwright said his character in "Is Anything Ever" is a man searching for his brother, who has killed his (the brother's) wife. The year-long quest has brought him to a small hotel room, where he runs the gamut of emotions intense to humorous humor-ous to embarassed in his soliloquy, and meditates on everything from religion and Trivia Test prejudice to Dear Abby. And he delivers a shocking revelation revel-ation to the audience at play's end, said Hamill. The man has a strong feeling for people but is obsessed, and frustrated by, peoples' gullibility. In the play, he recalls a friend who worked in a movie theater and got tired of answering stupid questions. This particular partic-ular frustration, Hamill said, comes out of his own experience working at a restaurant. "The questions I always got were about the location of the Coke machine, mach-ine, the hot chocolate, and the beer," he said. "People walked right up by them when they came to ask me." Hamill said that in his acting of the part, "the angry parts come out more", that his challenge is to capture some of the character's charac-ter's other emotions. "Richard "Rich-ard is insane angry, if that makes any sense to you," he said. In the three weeks, they have rehearsed, he said, there has been a close cooperation between actor and director. But the work is basically focused on reaching reach-ing ideas the different conception con-ception of each director. "I have my idea of what the man is, and Richard tries to give it to me," said Hamill. "And I try to meet Richard's concept of the character." The play also features two songs, "Heartbreaks and Promises", and "You Can't Find Love" with lyrics by Hamill and music by a Colorado friend, Grant Smith. For the future, Hamill said he is thinking about a three-act play called "Will I Never Learn", about a singer-songwriter who is so intent upon success that he alienates everyone around him. And in the meantime, there is a possibility that Hamill's first one-acter, "Mr. Bojangles" might be expanded into a film. The playwright said he met Paul Williams at the Park City Celebrity Race, and the songwriter expressed interest inter-est too. The first step, he said, is finding someone to pay $250,000 for the rights to the "Bojangles" song by Jerry Jeff Walker. The other one-act play, Linda Martin's "Early Frost", tells the story of two elderly sisters, Louise (Den-na (Den-na Wright) and Hannah (Anne Burnett) who take in their niece (Heidi Burnett) after her parents have been killed in an automobile crash. The crazed Hannah sees the young girl as a disturbing reminder of an old friend, dead some 50 years ago. The mystery in this 25-minute play, said Martin, revolves around the friend's fate and why she still haunts the old aunt. "It .leaves you with kind of a lunny feeling," she said. Ruth Ann Fitzgerald co-stars co-stars as the social worker w ho escorts the girl to her new home. And Lisa Green has been cast as the ghost of the dead friend. Martin said the play was written for TV by Douglas Parkhirst and produced in 1952. Directing is fun for her, Martin said, although the casting process was hard. The challenge, she said, is to convey an idea of the play that the actors can give back to her. She said of her cast "They make it easy to direct a play." The program will run April 8 - 10 and April 15 - 17, beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $3 for adults, and $2.50 for students and senior citizens. Even Zippy, the office mascot, couldn't come up with the answers this week. Sorry, we cheated There were no winners last week, because there weren't meant to be any. For our April Fool's edition, we tried to come up with questions that would strain the resources of even a Trivia Corner veteran. Asking about Ronald Reagan's profession in "Bonzo Goes to College" was rather unfair, since Reagan didn't even appear in that film. (It was a sequel to his picture "Bedtime for Bonzo". ) We also asked what happened to Amelia Earhart. (It was not acceptable to say, "She disappeared.") And we wondered how long you had to live in Park City to be an oldtimer. Maybe some wise man on a mountain top in Tibet (or Orem) knows the answer. But we didn't. We trust the following questions will be somewhat easier. And if you can be first in with the answers, you've won yourself a free sandwich sand-wich from the Main Street Deli. And they don't fool! Call us at 649-9014, or come to the office at 419 Main Street by Tuesday noon, with the answers to these questions: 1. What letter was "The Scarlet Letter", and what did it stand for? 2. What was the name of the town terrorized in the two "Halloween" films? 3. What two local actors starred in "Devil Bus"?
