Show Friluftsliv comes to Utah I he Newspaper Thursday, March 11, 1982 Page B3 There's a certain school of thought in Norway that calls for a lifestyle less involved in technology and more in tune with nature. It's called friluftsliv. That way of thinking and living has moved to Utah in the form of the Norwegian School of Nature Life, and its proponent is Tom Cammer-meyer, Cammer-meyer, a native Norwegian now living in Park city. Nature Life, Cammermeyer Cammer-meyer explained, advocates an unselfish, simple life in harmony with nature. The lifestyle calls for omitting over-consumption, technical dependency, materialism and high-pressure competition, com-petition, with the goal of a balance between man and nature. The concept of Nature Life is common in Norway, with persons of all ages following the lifestyle. The American branch of the school stems from the Norwegian Seminar Sem-inar of Nature Life in Hemesdal, Norway, he said. Courses in the philosophy and practical application of Nature Life are offered quarterly at the University of Utah. Classes include nordic touring, kayaking, canoeing, back-packing and snowshoeing combined with the teaching of ecological respect and the rhythms and energies found in nature. In the meantime, Cam-mermeyer Cam-mermeyer hopes to establish a branch of the school in Park City with a low-keyed, gentle approach to convinc ing people that we need to stop using up nature and start living with less depen-drncy depen-drncy on technology. Cammermeyer, who earned earn-ed his masters degree in leisure studies from the University of Utah, founded Norse Outings, an outdoor recreational program, in 1974 and later merged with the Norwegian School of Nature Life. His goal, he said, is to offer an alternative alterna-tive to the traditional forms of teaching environmental awareness. Cammermeyer said the school will provide courses and seminars both winter and summer, generally three days to a week in length, in outdoor education and recreation. In addition to nordic touring and kayaking, the school will offer bicycle touring, glacier walking, sailing and horseback riding, all emphasizing the Nature Life philosophy. "We want to share the idea that 'getting to the top' does not need to be a goal, that we all need to slow down," he said, adding that the school is not religiously oriented, nor is it based on a wilderness survival situation. situ-ation. "Courses are geared to the least experienced they are not stressful," he noted. Cammermeyer said his decision to expand the operations opera-tions of Nature Life came after conducting his University Univer-sity of Utah courses, entitled "The Unselfish and Simple II H The Ci Restaurant 'Early Bird 'Extravaganza Every day, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. featuring your choice of the following for (8.95 "In.: mt PARK CITY PROPERTIES photo by Michael Spauldlng Tom Cammermeyer Life in Nature." The weekend week-end course covers ski touring and outdoor winter camping in the Uintas. Employed at the information informa-tion desk at Deer Valley Resort, Cammermeyer said he isn't out to make radical changes in people's living habits, but just wants them "to slow down a little in what we are consuming. We can make do with what we have rather than buying and throwing away." "I believe that if we need to benefit from something, we will. We will see growth at a more moderate rate, and more in tune with nature." For more information, persons may contact the University of Utah, Division of Continuing Education, or write Cammermeyer at P.O Box 4036, Park City, 84060. (First Come, First Served) 1.
