Although the council was to have voted on a plan to use brick for the walks at their regular meeting last Thursday, Thurs-day, Councilwoman Tina Lewis had concerns she wanted wan-ted to address before a vote was taken. The council gave their votes by proxy to Lewis, who satisfied her concerns on Monday and gave the Moroccan brown bricks the nod. Lewis contacted the Historic District Commission Com-mission and various contractors contrac-tors for advice. The historic commission had rejected any method that would lay the bricks down on the sidewalk with visible mortar joints between bet-ween them. The "pattern" of joints and bricks conflicts with the appearance of Main Street buildings, said Lewis. Instead, the commission advised that the bricks would be wedged together tightly, and would rest on a layer of epoxy-like mortar that binds them to the concrete con-crete foundation below. This pives the sidewalk a uniform color, Lewis said. Lewis said she talked to all sides about the feasibility of brick sidewalks. "As it happened, hap-pened, the people I talked to first were in favor of plain old dumb concrete," she said, explaining her initial opposition. op-position. Brick, she explained, has two or three advantages. "It has good traction," she said. "And it's easier to tear up if repairs have to be made." And brick also avoids a common problem with deteriorating concrete when the top layer peels off. The sidewalks will have new concrete curbs, explained ex-plained Tony Jay, chairman of the Historic District Commission, and will have concrete aprons in areas where side streets exit onto Main Street. The bricks will be set down in layers running run-ning east and west. "This is a proven technique," said Jay. "The brick will look exactly like the platform at the railroad depot." The bricks will be laid on east Main Street this year, with the west side to follow in 1982. 1 . f t - , 'V . "N. . .1 I& If. 'V J I AL1 .- --f : 'frp. In I -.Jsj A if Vjh ' '--.-.-.-j. - .. . Shangri - La Ent. For a brighter day... window cleaning by Shangri-La 649-6887 A dog's best friend The anesthetic had done its job. The patient lay motionless in the chair, oblivious to his surroundings, surroun-dings, while the dentist moved methodically to remove the roots from the broken canine tooth. It was obvious that Dane Robinson had done his share of root canals. Chances are, he had worked on more than a few canine teeth. But what made this operation so unusual was that he was doing a root canal on a canine's canine. That's right. Robinson's patient was a dog. Any semi-articulate mutt will tell you that a canine tooth is a dog's best friend, and Farley is no exception. Farley, a friendly little pooch of undetermined lineage, came down recently with a broken canine and discovered that it impaired his ability to mangle his meat. So Robinson, em-pathetic em-pathetic individual that he is, decided to do something about it. Recognizing that dogs don't get root canals every day, Robinson had notified the local newspapers and television stations. On hand were a cameraman and reporter from Channel Four, recording the operation for posterity. Also on hand was Steve Carter of the White Pine Veterinary Clinic, brought in to administer the anesthetic. The first step, Robinson explained, was to remove the damaged nerve. From there, he planned to install an anchor an-chor in the tooth, then build it up in preparation for a r r 'I C A A ' Farley and friend crown. Phase One of the operation took place last Thursday. Another session will be held for Robinson to cap off his crowning glory. So if you run into this little brown mutt on Main Street flashing a bright golden smile, don't be too alarmed. It will be Farley showing off his new dental work.
