O 33 - Love Boat Parkwest to host concert series again For music lovers, there's nothing like watching an artist play on stage. But for Park City music lovers, seeing Emmylou Harris or Jerry Jeff Walker has meant driving to Salt Lake and sitting in a concert hall. Until last year, that is. Last summer, Sean Toomey and Scott Arnold of Creative Concerts brought those musicians and many more right to Park City's doorstep when they produced pro-duced a number of big-time concerts at the Parkwest Resort. For those who live in the mountains, there was little doubt that the concerts would be a success. After all, the setting is near-perfect for taking in the scenery and listening to great music, plus, it's just down the road a piece. But for the concert promoters, pro-moters, it was their first year at Parkwest. Would people make the drive up the canyon from Salt Lake? Would they like the groups that were scheduled? Would musical "stars" come to a place they'd never heard of? The answer to those questions ques-tions was yes. The people came by the carload to hear a variety of music from country-western to blues to folk, and they stayed through sunshine and downpour. Their enthusiasm easily was matched by that of the artists. And that's good, because it means Creative Concerts is coming back again this summer. ...with a bigger and better lineup, and improved facilities. "With the environment at Parkwest, the trend last summer was up-tempo music. ...blues-based and Western," said Toomey. "It was an environment where people felt free and unrestricted. unre-stricted. There were refreshments, refresh-ments, lots of space, and good music to listen to. So we're going to focus on that same up-tempo music again this year." According to Toomey, what Creative Concerts has in mind this year are not just concerts, but events. "We're going to try to do something fun for every show add an element of humor or something different," differ-ent," Toomey said. For example, he said the Fourth, of July concert will offer a special price for kids, and there will be a fireworks display. But the real event is the music. At most concerts, you can expect to pay a healthy ticket price and see the headline act and a warm-up group. "We're trying to create events," said Toomey. "People can come and watch the clouds, talk to friends they haven't seen in four years, drink a beer, eat some dinner, and still be listening to more music than you'll find anywhere at one time." Toomey said he hopes to hold a concert on the average of once a week from the opener June 21 into September. The type of music will vary from week to week so that every musical taste should be satisfied. And for the economy-conscious, Creative Concerts is offering a season pass. A book of 10 tickets will sell for $80, with the restriction that only two tickets from the book be used for any one concert. "If you have the pass, you won't have to rush off somewhere to buy tickets in advance, or stand at the gate," said Toomey. "With the pass, it means that at one concert, you can see Jerry Jeff Walker, Pure Prairie League, Cow Jazz and Commander Com-mander Cody for $8. That's a good deal." Toomey said there are a limited number of passes being printed, and they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Nearly all of the concerts have been booked for Saturday or Sunday afternoons, although there may be an occasional mid-week show if an artist can't make it any other time. Concert promotion is a competitive business, Toomey said, and success rests in large part on the audience. If a promoter scores a big act and no one shows for the concert, it means there's less money to spend on another concert, and worse, the reputation of the facility and the promoter takes a licking. But the crowds last year and the enthusiasm of the musicians themselves bodes well for the future of both Parkwest and Creative Concerts. Con-certs. "The performers we had last year were blown away by Parkwest," said Toomey. "At the Blues Festival last summer, they could've said they wouldn't play because of the rain. But B.B. King said how great the place was and that he hoped he'd be invited back." (B.B. was the first artist invited back, and has accepted for the Blues Festival July 25). "Most of the artists are used to playing in major cities in big concert halls and arenas," said Toomey. They brighten up on the ride up Parley's Canyon, and when they see Park West, it's like a breath of fresh air, and they respond to it. "The environment is great for the audience, and they have a great time and show it. The artists have a great time and respond to the audience and the surroundings. surround-ings. The musicians coming to Park West put on a better show than anyplace else in the state." As hard as Creative Concerts Con-certs is working to put together good shows, the promoters don't take all the credit. "A big part of the success is the Park City community itself, and all the people we've worked with at Park-west Park-west and in the county," Toomey said. "And we couldn't have done any shows without the support of the Kimball Art Center." The enthusiasm from all those involved has resulted in improvements of the facilities at Parkwest this year. Toomey said the stage area and the production capabilities have been expanded, ex-panded, the grass planted last year has come up, making the seating more comfortable, the sound system sys-tem has been doubled in size, and most importantly, there'll be more beer for sale... and more portable potties pot-ties brought in. Last year, Toomey said, there were some problems with gate-crashers. 4:00 P.M. 3D - NCAA Baseball: College World Series 5:30 P.M. 33) - Major League Baseball: Pittsburgh vs. Chicago 6:00 P.M. But if people come and they don't pay, it may mean we won't be able to do that show again, or that we'll have to cut back on the number or quality of shows we can schedule." To help keep order in the crowd, Toomey said there will be a much expanded, professional security force riding on horseback at the concerts this year. According to Toomey, it's a relatively simple, but important cycle: the more the public responds to the concerts by going to them and paying the ticket price, the more frequent and popular popu-lar the concerts that can be scheduled. Toomey was not able to reveal the full schedule of concerts by press time, but if the groups he's been hinting at come through, there are some really big surprises in store for music fans.
