Tom Stover's Cowboy Grub from 5:00 p.m. Johnson Leads PC Skiers Led by a spectacular performance from 10-year-old Bret Johnson, the Park City Ski Team took three of a possible six first-place finishes fin-ishes at the peewee-novice slalom held Saturday at Snowbird. Johnson's two-run combined com-bined time of 82.52 seconds was nine seconds better than the second-place finisher among the peewee boys, and one-and-a-half seconds better bet-ter than the top finisher in the Novice Boys I division Park City's Jere Calmes. Led by Johnson, Park City racers took three of the top five places among the peewee pee-wee boys. In third place was Dan Tebbs, who skis as an independent. Tebbs was the highest finisher among the mighty mite racers who competed in the same division divi-sion as the older peewees. In Novice Boys I, Jere Calmes was followed by Jeremy Nobis, another member of the Park City Ski Team. Park City racers also finished one-two in the Novice Girls II division, with Casey Hazelrigg taking top honors in 90.24 seconds, followed by Lynn Baldwin in second. Meanwhile, the experts from the Park City Ski Team were in Idaho competing in a slalom race Saturday and Sunday at Grand Targhee. Jason Lawson had a flawless flaw-less weekend, finishing first both Saturday and Sunday in the Junior Olympic qualifying qualify-ing race. Park City's Niki Koch also took a first place among the expert women and Junior Olympic qualifiers on Saturday, Satur-day, and Tori Pillinger finished first among the expert women on Sunday. Among other local finishers, fin-ishers, Shawn Hazelrigg and Scott Williams finished second and third Saturday in the expert men's division, and Andrea Peterson, Erin Calmes and Jenny Lewis all finished in the top five in Sunday's race for Junior Olympic qualifiers. Holm opened the scoring with less than eight minutes played in the game with a sizzling slapshot from just inside the blue line which caught the lower right corner cor-ner of the net. Park City Captain Eric Smith tied the score late in the first period, taking the puck about eight feet in front of the Flyers' net and whipping a wrist shot over the goalie's right shoulder. Smith added his second goal early in the second period, scoring from a scramble in front of the net to give the Silver Kings a brief 2-1 lead. But Holm quickly returned the favor, carrying the puck behind the Park City goal, then scoring from an almost impossible angle on a shot which slipped between goalie Dave O'Brien and the post. It seemed for a while as if the Silver Kings would settle for their second straight tie, as there was no scoring for the rest of the second period and much of the third. But the Flyers finally pulled ahead to stay on a goal by Bob Tucker with about five minutes to play. ' Holm's third goal, in the late seconds, was disputed in vain by the Silver Kings. A Salt Lake player had inadvertently in-advertently moved the Park City net from its designated spot on the ice, which should have forced an automatic .whistle. But the. referee allowed the game to continue, con-tinue, awarding a goal to the Flyers when Holm's shot bounced off the post and settled behind the red line. Park City's next scheduled game is Sunday at 4 p.m. in Bountiful against the Salt LakeJuniors. KPCW Memorial Bldg. Park City 649-9004 |
