It's also important, Williams said, that board members explain why they voted on issues the way they did. "So often I've heard people say, 'If we just knew why!,'" said Williams. "When they aren't told, they get the feeling they don't count." Williams, a former elementary elemen-tary school teacher, is running run-ning for the Park City School Board from Precinct 4. "I know I can represent the people," Williams said. One of her goals is to increase citizen involvement. Most of the time, she indicated, people think it's too much work to get involved with the school board. Only certain controversial decisions bring them out. Williams said she can rally people together to get involved. in-volved. If the citizens have a strong representative they feel comfortable with, she said, they will call on that representative to talk about the issues. "I will listen to everybody, identify the problems, and carefully examine alternatives," alter-natives," she said. She has considered setting up telephone tele-phone calling hours for her constituents. "Or if it is a big enough problem, we could have a meeting," she remarked. Williams said she first thought about running for the school board after the dismissal of the two Middle School teachers. "That's when you usually think of running, isn't it? When you're unhappy about something?" some-thing?" Sometimes, she said, board members lose touch with their people. In the Middle School controversy, contro-versy, "the board members were not receptive," she said. "There were compromises com-promises and alternatives that could have been chosen. The teachers need to be listened to." Though that episode piqued her interest in the school board, Williams is more concerned with other problems prob-lems now and would rather not dwell on what she considers a dead issue. Besides, she said, "I'm not a politician, I don't like mud-slinging." mud-slinging." She did pause to sling a little praise, noting she was happy with recent changes in the school district's dis-trict's curriculum. Williams obtained a B A. in education at Central Washington Wash-ington College. She lived ten years in Salt Lake, and taught elementary school for eight of those years in the Granite District. Since her move to Park City nine years ago, she's served as a substitute substi-tute teacher, and a volunteer with the Kimball Art Center, Youth Soccer, and other activities. She has two offspring off-spring enrolled in Park City High. Precinct 4, she said, was until recently included in the South Summit District, even though the youngsters there attended Park City schools. After the population boom, Williams noted, the district boundaries were changed. Susan Williams hopes to provide the first real representation repre-sentation her neighborhood has had on the Park City School Board. pl 4RfaffibDE by CEDAR SUMMIT BUILDERS P.O.
