Show Thursday, January 24, 1 980 Glidden Glides To Overland Win - 1 7 : . Wiry Jock Glidden out-skied out-skied his younger competitors competi-tors to win the third Wasatch Mountain Overland cross-- cross-- country citizen's race Jan. 19. Forty-four-year-old Glidden, Glid-den, a professor at Weber State College in Ogden, completed the six-mile course from Brighton to Park City in 46 minutes, 53 seconds. Capturing second place was Drew Barney (50:26), also from Ogden, followed by Park City's Rich Groth (51:26). Fifty-one skiers of all ages raced, from youngsters young-sters David Van Luven, Craig Irvine and Thomas Smith (all under 13) to 73-year-old Ed Phelps from Kaysville. Top finishing women were Marsha Rasmussen (64:47), a cross-country instructor from Alta, followed by Malin Jonsdotter (68:56) and Sally Desonia (69:54). The race began shortly after 10 a.m. at the Brighton Touring Center. Charlie Butler But-ler of the sponsoring Wasatch Wa-satch Mountain Touring Company gave the "go," and the mass of skiers, with skis in hand, ran down the Big Cottonwood highway and up the plowed bottom section of the Guardsman Pass road. At the hairpin turn, they donned skis and climbed the Guardsman Road, cutting off on the mining road that leads to Scott's Pass. From Scotts, it was all downhill. Racers cut through the powder and moguls to reach the Jupiter lift, then tucked and double-poled down the snowcat roads past the bottom of the Thaynes and Triple chairs to the mouth of Thaynes Canyon where the course jogged over the hill td the Spiro Tunnel, cut across Three Kings Drive jumped the creek and finally shot across the golf course on the only section of prepared track on the whole course, and finished fin-ished at the White Pine Touring Center. , Brighton Touring Center sits at 8,730 feet. The climb to Scott's Pass (9,750 feet) is 1,020 feet and the descent down Thaynes Canyon to the White Pine Touring Center on the golf course is 2,760 vertical feet. Race official Steve Erick-son Erick-son timed skiers as they crossed the finish. Erickson, who won last year's Overland, Over-land, was out this year with the flu. Snow conditions varied from powder to soft pack. Most of the top finishers were on lightweight racing gear this year. Perpetually skiers debate which is best for mountain races: heavy gear that offers greater control on steep downhill and icy sections, or racing gear that moves fast both uphill and down but is difficult to control out of prepared tracks. The racers definitely had the edge in this race. Listed below are the top finishers in each class. The names of local skiers are marked with an asterisk.
