Show SE Thursday, January 17, 1980 Pafl1 Japan Added to In a period when many professional sports are reducing re-ducing their schedules, World Pro Skiing continues to expand announcing yet another stop for the international inter-national tour Sapporo, Japan. The 14th race, scheduled for Feb. 15-17, will be held at the same site where top professional profes-sional ski racing tour appeared ap-peared last season. According Accord-ing to Bob Beattie, founder and executive director of World Pro Skiing, the upcoming up-coming competition in Japan will feature three events, (downhill, giant slalom and slalom) as opposed to two (giant slalom and slalom) held there on the circuit's last visit, and will present a total purse of $70,000 richest weekend for the tour this year. "Every available ski racing weekend was sold prior to the season, which is a first in J?xo T ' J . l ) , , t j ; i the sport's 11-year history," Beattie, president of World Pro Skiing and former Olympic Olym-pic Ski Team coach. "I say available because the tour was scheduled to take a two-week break during the Winter, Olympics. The Japanese Ja-panese sponsor preferred the tour visit there during that time. We also found the dates suitable and put the race on the 1979-80 schedule." The sponsor for the Japan race is' Nippon Electric Company". The dual slalom-style slalom-style of professional ski racing is popular in Japan, being very suitable for television, and compliments the local professional tour our conducted each winter. The Japan race in February brings the total pme money for this season's tour to $695,000 which is World Pro Skiing's richest season ever. Resort Hosts USS A Racers The Park City Ski Club hosted all classes of the In-termountain In-termountain Division of the United States Skiing Association over the weekend, and more than 400 racers came to try out the local snow and talent. Murn-in. When the opposing team is on the attack, Murnin is constantly on the move, keeping himself between the ball and the basket. "He plays the most important im-portant defensive position on the court, and he's perfect for it," said Miner Coach Bruce Reid. "He's an on-court on-court thinker." Murnin, a 5'9" senior, is in his second year on the varsity squad. He became a starter mid-way through the 1978-79 season. "He's my most reliable defensive player," said Reid. "He's always the first guy back on defense." Barney Murnin is known as the consumate team player, and one who works hard on improving his game. "He's mature well beyond his years," his coach observed. ob-served. "You never see him get upset by his own performance per-formance if things go wrong. I've never heard him say one complaining word in three years." Murnin also is described by his teachers as a good student and a solid citizen. If he has a weakness, it is on the offensive end of the court. He is a reluctant shooter, and rarely finishes a game with more than six or eight points. . . if ft ? "At the beginning of the year he was the absolute opposite of his cousin," Reid said. Jeff Murnin has been criticized criti-cized for his lack of defensive defen-sive skills, but Reid indicated indi-cated this picture has been changing recently, as Jeff has spent more time working on this facet of his game. "If I was to vote for someone who has improved the most, he'd definitely be in the running. He's at a point now where he can play anytime, anywhere against anybody." Jeff's unorthodox shot has been used to bring opponents away from their defensive basket. "He's developed into our most volatile offensive weapon wea-pon against the zone," Reid said. "He has the capability of filling them up from the outside." Jeff and Barney Murnin will be Park City's starting guards this Friday against Mt. Vernon, as Mark Uriarte is out of the lineup with a touch of mononucleosis. Jeff, like Barney, stands about 5'9" and also is a senior. Expert classes. "Obviously, Saturday and Sunday were very miserable race days," said Park City Ski Club Coach Bob Marsh. "But Park City did very well. We haven't been able to do a lot of free skiing on the mountain because of the conditions, but with the improved im-proved snow, we hope to get to the top forsome long, non-stoppers non-stoppers for training. All in all, Park City did great." A giant slalom race was held Saturday for Novices and Sunday for the Mighty Mites and PeeWees.
