But if you want to work for the Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management Manage-ment or many other federal fed-eral agencies, the deadline dead-line for applying for summer employment is Jan. 15. Forest Service There are 155 national forests in the United States, but you can only apply to one of them for summer work. (Apply at two or more and the computer will reject all your applications.) The form to fill out for work as a forestry aid or forestry technician is "Application "Ap-plication for Temporary Employment," (FS-6100-23 879). The 20-page form asks for a variety of information (name, address, work experience, ex-perience, felony record, etc.). The form is the same for all national forests, so no matter where you intend to apply, you can pick one up at nearby ranger district offices of-fices in Salt Lake (6944 So. 3000 East, phone 524-5042). In the Forest Service's In-termountain In-termountain Region, there is a wide variation among forests between the number of applicants and the number num-ber of people hired Last year, the Bridger Teton Forest in Wyoming had 180 job openings lor which there were !Ho applicants, so only 20 percent of those applying were hired. At the other extreme, ex-treme, the Manti-La Sal Forest in central Utah had 139 people apply for 130 job openings, with a hiring rate of 93 percent. Locally. the Uinta National Forest hires 104 of 160 applicants n5 percent), while the Wasatch National Forest hired 214 of 382 applicants ap-plicants (56 percent). Obviously, chances for a summer job are as dependent depen-dent on where you apply as they are on vuiir qualification. Many more build fences, plant trees, clean outhouses, pick up garbage, thin trees or perform the numerous other tasks necessary for the maintenance of the forest. In addition, almost everyone in the Forest Service fights fire when the need arises. At times, this is exciting, more often it is simply hard andor tedious labor. To work on the fireline, the Forest Service requires employees em-ployees pass a curious physical fitness exam known as the STEP test. It is a simple sim-ple test : step up and down on a wooden box for five minutes, rest for 15 seconds then measure your pulse According to the test, low pulse means you are lit to fight fire, high pulse in dicates you are not lit People apparently in good shape often flunk the test while others who appear palid sometimes pass it easily. Summer employees are hired at federal wage grades GS-2 through (JS-5. GS-2s make $3.9()hotir. GS-3s are-paid are-paid $4.3()hour. GS-4s earn $4.80hour and GS-5s receive $5.40hour. Employees can better than double thir biweekly pay checks working on fires. There are Forest Service summer jobs other than forestry aid and forestry technician positions. Wage grade positions are blue-collar type jobs, and each forest sets its own recruitment dates for these. Persons interested in summer clerical positions must have applications in by Jan. 11 and then take a written writ-ten test in February or March. As we have stated before, the game is one of escape and capture. It is not one of speed, but of position and deft timing. The first objective object-ive offensively is to build a five point block, or prime, from one's four point to the already established eight point, thereby hindering the escape of the opponents back men. Defensively, one should attempt to establish a forward anchor in their opponents inner board (preferably (pre-ferably his four or five point). The single most important point on the board is un-doubtably un-doubtably the opposing player's play-er's five point. Possession of this point disrupts his plans offensively. He will find it extremely difficult and awkward awk-ward to contain these men on his five point. It prevents him from eventually establishing estab-lishing a closed board, and almost guarantees against the loss of a double game, as eventual escape will be an easy task to perform. Holding Hold-ing this vital point also allows a player to take greater risks throughout the game, since he has an established anchor on which he may re-enter any of his men that are hit. Another concept to grasp is the absolute importance of the doubling cube. In backgammon back-gammon it is possible to win either a single, double, or triple game. If we were involved in a .game at ten dollars a point it would therefore be possible to win, or lose, only ten, twenty, or thirty dollars in one game. The doubling cube, however, adds an immense new dimension di-mension to this game. If either player wishes, he may double his opponent before the roll of his dice. Let's assume that we dvose to double our opponent. Before we roll our dice, he is faced forests have YCC camps, and the types of camps vary among forests. Inquire at the forest of your choice. National Park Service The National Forests are part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, while the national parks are under the Department of the Interior. The forests are managed for multiple use, which means recreational users share the land with sheepherders. loggers, miners and others while the national parks are preserves, managed for recreation and protection of intrinsic values. The Park Service has a separate application and dil ferent rules for summer employment em-ployment National parks are scattered across the country, but all applications go to Washington. You may submit only one application, but list two choices of parks you want to work in. There are five national parks in Utah Zion Canyon. Bryce Canyon. Arches. Capitol Reef and Canyonlands and several more national monuments. Most are located in the red rock country of southern Utah. Bureau of Land Management The BLM manages much of the desert land in western and southern Utah, and some of Utah's wild rivers, including Desolation Canyon on the Green River and Westwater on the Colorado. Through January 15, the BLM State Office in Salt Lake will accept applications ap-plications for seasonal employment em-ployment coinciding with most school summer vacation periods. Some jobs, however, begin as early as April and continue as late as November, depending on weather conditions. Each summer the BLM employs a limited number of students and other temporary tem-porary personnel to work with professional employees. em-ployees. This practice gives students and others an opportunity op-portunity to gain training and to plan for a future with a difficult decision. He may choose to accept our double and continue to play the game at double the stakes ($20-point) or he may refuse our double and lose one point ($10) and start a new game. Upon the assumption assump-tion that our opponent accepts this double, the game continues with white owning the cube at 2. Should the game switch over in favor of white, he may choose to redouble black, only this time the double would be from the two level to the four level. We are offered exactly the same choice as white had previously; pre-viously; either accept this double and continue the game at $40-point, or refuse the redouble, accept our $20 loss and get on with a new game. If, for example, we were gammoned (a double game) with the cube at four, we would have to trade Benjamin Franklin for Andrew An-drew Jackson, certainly not my idea of having a good time. Possession of the doubler creates a great deal of equity for the player. Once one accepts a double, he may play the game out until the very end, hope for miracle rolls, and do everything in his power to try to win the game. Conversely, his opponent oppo-nent must always be aware of the threat his opponent has at hand and must, constantly apply pressure once he has given up possession of the cube. Diagrams 1 and 2 illustrate a position that demonstrates another concept of this game; namely, flexibility. Watch an expert play backgammon back-gammon and one will become be-come increasingly aware of the fluidity of his play. He never seems to have an overabundance of men together to-gether on one point. All of his forces are diversified in such a way as to make almost any throw of the dice into an acceptable and fluid position. In diagram 1, black has a 3-2 to play. If selected, you must pay your transportation transpor-tation costs from your home to the job headquarters and return. After all, it does create a solid four point pime and establishes offensive control of black's important five point, but it is not the correct way to play this roll. The move that should be made is that of making the four point. This leaves an extra checker (or builder) on the eight point, and creates a broken five point prime. It also leaves black with a more flexible position in that, on his succeeding rolls, he will be able to handle many more numbers effectively. Compare that situation with the incorrect move that most players make as shown in diagram 2. This leaves black completely stripped of builders, build-ers, five men awkwardly piled on his six point, and praying for good dice on his next throw.
