Show Thursday, August 23,1979 5 Page 9 ines Open M I i is Continued from Page 1 ventures had been ' operating the mine since 1970 under a contract with United Park City Mines. But it closed operations, ironically, on Friday the 13th of January, 1978 because of heavy losses. During their tenure, Ventures had spent about $28 million on mine improvements and construction of a mill, in addition to paying $35,000 quarterly to United Park in advance royalties. Ventures is a 60-40 joint venture between the Anaconda Co. and Asarco Inc., with the two companies owning about 31 percent of United Park's outstanding shares. On Tuesday, United Park City Mine Company secretary-treasurer LeMar Oseka commented that the new tenants will operate under the same terms as the lease agreement with Ventures. The agreement, which became effective in 1970, runs for 40 years, with a 25-year renewal option. He commented that United Park is to receive one third of the profits. Ventures had been operating at a loss. "We now should be in a position to participate sooner in the profits than if Ventures had retained the lease," Oseka said. "But the biggest thing is, the mine will open in Park City." Malcolm Slack, general manager of Noranda Mining Inc., said Tuesday from his Toronto office, that the final contract was to have been signed yesterday with Ventures. "We will be exercising our option rights and our present plans will bring the property to production through rehabilitation." Slack said he was not at liberty to disclose when the mine would be reopening or how many miners would be employed, or if any or all of them would be rehired from the Ventures operation. Slack said the Denver-based Noranda Exploration Inc. took over the option and intends to assign the lease to Noranda Mining Inc. and Pamour-Porcupine Mines Inc., which will be partners in the venture. He said Pamour is a public gold mining company in Timmins, Canada, with more than 60 years experience in mines similar to Park City's. Although Al-though Slack conceded that Park City's tunnels have water problems and narrow veins, "we don't see any problems that are insurmountable." Asked if he was concerned with the possible construction of the Jordanelle Dam, which is expected to bring more unwanted water to the Park City tunnels, Slack answered, "Yes, we are. We met with the Bureau of Reclamation last Tuesday and with about 20 of their hydrologists and engineers. And we've met with the Bureau of Mines and showed them our findings from our research of the last few months. We have a field trip set up with the Bureau of Reclamation and Noranda to look at the situation further. We think there definitely could be an impact. There's an awful lot of work to be done before the dam is built, and there are more findings to come. But we feel the opportunity is greater than the problems."
