' f V -sr'.'s-: Alcohol Brain Damage ay Be Reversible M Reprinted from the New Vork Times Brain damage suffered by chronic alcoholics, long thought to be permanent, may be partly reversible with abstinence from liquor, researchers say. The new Canadian findings find-ings indicate that some damaged brain cells may rejuvenate and regain some of their function when alcoholics stop drinking. .' ' The University of Toronto researchers say this could help explain why many severe alcoholics who quit drinking gradually recover some of their impaired memory, coordination and abilities to reason abstractly and learn new tasks. "This is the first time anyone has shown reversible cerebral atrophy in adult human beings," Dr. Peter L. Carlen, one of the chief investigators, in-vestigators, said in an interview inter-view yesterday. Recovery of Tiny Threads In a report in the Journal of Science, the researchers say they are not suggesting that entire brain cells, called neurons, regenerate and grow. It is generally believed that these nerve cells do not reproduce in adult mammals. But they theorize that tiny threads called dendrites, which carry impulses into nerve cells, can recover and possibly grow if not damaged too badly by alcohol. Along with dendrite growth, there may also be increases in other nerve fibers, supporting tissue and small " blood vessels;- they add. - ' The researchers base their theory on a series of special brain X-rays taken of eight chronic alcoholics treated at the Addiction Research Foundation Clinical Institute of Ontario. The patients, all with more than 10-year histories of heavy drinking, received no special treatments. treat-ments. As part of the study, six patients stopped drinking while two continued. The first X-ray scans, which electronically recreate cross-section brain slices, showed a loss of cerebral tissue and large cavities in the brains of four abstaining subjects. Gain in Nerve Tissue Scans taken months later showed smaller cavities and what appeared to be more nerve tissue, the study said. The two subjects who continued con-tinued to drink showed no changes between brain scans. However, no changes were noted in the two other abstaining ab-staining subjects either. But the researchers said that both had shown marked improvements im-provements in function tests before- the first scan was done and it was possible that changes that would have been detectable had occurred oc-curred before the first scan. Dr. Carlen said that there were no data to show if alcoholics with brain damage who drank less or for a shorter period of time were more likely to recover some impaired mental function func-tion than others. "But we have evidence that all chronic alcoholics who drink for 10 years or more have signs of cerebral atrophy," he said. Working with Dr. Carlen on the continuing study are Drs. D. Adrian Wilkinson, George Wortzman, Richard Holgate and James Rankin. chimney sweeps extoordmaiire P.O.
