Show 1 Wednesday, February 8, 1978 Page 13 i I II I II f I with Craig Attschul "All right. Quiet on the set. Lights, Camera. Action. Start that snow machine, dummy." It's not "take one" any more. It's "double-take." "double-take." You probably have read 20th Century Fox is buying the Aspen Corporation. (At least at this writing, it seems like it's a deal. ) Apparently, they have so much money laying around from the success of "Star Wars," they've got to do something with it. And, I've always said, if you're going to buy something, it might as well be Aspen. They say they won't tamper with management, but I really don't believe it. In any corporate take-over, the newcomers always think they know more than the people who made it all profitable to begin with over the years. So, I will bide my time. Wait and see. And, sometime in 1982 I'll check into the Hotel Jerome to see what's happening. I'm sure it will be something like this : I'll pull up to the entrance of the town out of the Rockies to a guard station. . "Yes, sir," says the guard. "Can I help you?" "Whattaya mean, help me?" I'll yell. "I'm here to ski. This is Aspen isn't it?" "Used to be, bud," he snarls. "You wanna get in? Who do ya know?" "Well, once I paid a fortune to watch John Denver sing in the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. I guess that makes me his friend." I'll say. "That's not good enough," he'll counter. "Do you know Darth Vader?" "Hey, fella, this is Aspen. Not some galaxy long ago and far away. This is one of America's premier ski resorts. You know. ..Buttermilk, Little Lit-tle Nell... The Big Burn. Aspen," I yell. "Do you know Carrie Fisher?" he'll retort. "No. But, I remember Jill St. John and she used to live here didn't she? " "Used to. Lots of folks used to live here. Lots of dogs too. But no more. Not since 20th Century Fox took over," he says with a smile. "Well, what's here now?" I'll ask. "Look fella, I'm busy. If you'll wait over on that bench, the tourmobile leaves in 10 minutes. And, keep your skis in the car. This is the "New Aspen. You won't need those stupid things SKI RENTAL & REPAIR ALL NEW EQUIPMENT PERSONALIZED SERVICE ONE BLOCK TO LIFTS PROFESSIONAL SKI TUNING & REPAIR SKI ACCESSORIES LOWEST PRICES IN TOWN HIGH PERFORMANCE DEMOS $6.00 DAILY RENTAL $35.00 WEEKLY RENTAL SKI CONNECTION BAR 5c BEER HAPPY HOUR ON THE SUNDECK MADE TO ORDER SANDWICHES AND PIZZA HOMEMADE CHILI & COOKIES DRAFT BEER & SET UPS FAMILIES WELCOME COURTESY TRANSPORTATION can 649-8430 LOCATED AT THE RESORT ENTRANCE 649-8430 anymore." I'll walk to the bench and wait. Soon the tour-mobile tour-mobile will come. It's painted with pink and white stripes. I hop aboard and take a seat. A pretty young hostess... lithe, blonde... told me she would be my guide. I recognized her from an old chapstick commercial. Here's what she'll say. "Hi. I'm Suzy Chapstick and my love life is fine, thank you. I'd like to welcome you on behalf of 20th Century Fox to our 'Rocky Mountain Kingdom.' For the next 20 minutes we will show you the inner workings of what was once, would you believe, a silly old ski area, until 20th Century Cen-tury Fox came along with millions of dollars to make it into our alpine studio set. "Look. Off to the right is our memorial to Nelson Eddy. Be quiet now and you can hear him singing 'Springtime in the Rockies.' It's my favorite song. Isn't it yours?" "No," I'll say. "Mine is 'Rocky Mountain High' by John Denver. Say, doesn't he live here.. .you know at Starwood-at-Aspen?" "John Denver, John Denver... I remember.. remem-ber.. .let's see," she says. "Oh, yes. He was deported to Winter Park after we quieted the protesters. You see he got upset when we removed all the chairlifts. He couldn't understand under-stand why we wanted to get rid of them. But, after af-ter all, the Mother Superior did tell us to 'Climb Every Mountain.' "Oh, listen. Isn't it beautiful? That's our new quadraphonic sound system in the trees. It's playing 'The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Music' I gulp. "But, what about skiing? This was Aspen? Don't people ski here any more?" She gave me a startled look. "Oh yes. The Wookie skis. If you look carefully up on the left, the Wookie will ski for you. And, I'm told the ski scene from our new James Bond movie will be shot here." "Look over there. That's our data processing center. R2D2 is in charge of it. ' ' "Now, be very quiet," she warned. The tour-mobile tour-mobile was going inside a building. The sign said "The Purple Onion." "This is an historic building," my guide said. "Skiers used to do the silliest things here. We've left it just as it was and if you are quiet, it will bring back many memories. Walt Disney's staff created the scene. There are 3,200 movable parts on the dance floor alone." I look in awe. The place is jammed. Jeans. Sweaters, $300 outfits. Laughter. Loud, obnoxious ob-noxious music. Plenty of food. There it is. The Purple Onion of days gone by. My heart skipped a beat as the tourmobile swept out the door and made its way back to the entrance gate. "Look to your right now and you'll see the huge stage set we built to look just like the Rocky Mountains. Isn't it beautiful?" she'll say. "Oh, we think it's just great. Those mountains you see are all painted on a scrim, you know. And, the rocks. ..those big jagged ones. ..are made out of foam. The trees are just paper mache. The sun is from a huge strobe light. The snow is styrofoam. We're so proud of this set." "But, Suzy," I'll cry. "Why did you have to do all that? This is Aspen. These are the Rocky Mountains. It's crazy." "Silly boy," she says. "We had to make them look realistic." Well, one good thing will come of it all. The only lines here will be for popcorn. Keep your SKI TIPS up." Time Runs Out, Eagles Lose, 27-26 By Coach Steve Leathani Time ran out on the Winters Win-ters Middle School Eagles last Thursday night. Behind by as many as 12 points to Churchill Junior High School, the Eagles fell one point short of the hot shooting Salt Lake five after a spirited second half rally. Churchill, after defeating the Eagles in the first game of the season by 20 points held on to win the rematch 27-26. The Eagles had the momentum and the ball but fell victim to old man time before they could grasp final victory in the close contest. Showing tremendous improvement im-provement over the last two weeks, the Winters' squad proved their mettle by avenging the embarassing first game loss. Steve Toly once again led all scorers getting his usual season game average 18 points. Toly was spectacular on the boards, pulling down rebounds on both ends of the floor with what seemed to be relative ease. After viewing all of the teams in the Eagle's Bantam League Division, Toly stands out as the best all around player in the conference. Steve also boasts one of the largest cheering sections in the league with parents Pete and Mary Lou Toly and grandparents gran-dparents Mr. and Mrs. Farrell Wheelwright in attendance at-tendance at most ball games. Roger Burns turned in another fine performance for the Bruce Reid, Steve Leatham coached quintet coming up with four points and an excellent defensive display on the Churchilll high scorer. Bill Simmons was his normal ball-hawking self, scoring two points and showing what Coach Reid calls a "Pete Rose like" desire for competition. Simmons has plenty of support sup-port at every game also, his father, Middle School Principal Prin-cipal Mark Simmons, is the Eagles' most vocal fan. Paul Mawhinney and Jeff Scott, the Eagles' other starters were very instrumental in the heart breaking comeback. Chris Cooper, Shawn Packard and Greg Bair Tresch Takes came off the bench in the second quarter to keep the Eagles within shouting distance of the quick starting Churchill team. However, it was the spirited third quarter quar-ter defensive show put on by Jamie Puckett, Chad Hughes and Steve Lindskov that brought the Winters' team to within fourth quarter striking distance for the starting five. Lindskov also added two points and a proud mother, father and brother to the Eagle cause. oney ANNUAL PARK CITY REC. DEPT. 43 tft RUN This year the Rec.
