Munich was as close as a television set in 1972 and soon the Germans may see Park City just as easily. A new ski film, "Skiing the U.S.A." is being produced for German home viewing by Bavaria Atelier Television. The film company com-pany is the second largest in the world behind America's 20th Century Fox and is based in Germany's answer to Hollywood Geiselgasteig in Grunwald, a suburb of Munich. Bavaria has filmed many American stars, but among the most notable was Liza Minelli in "Cabaret." The six gregarious Germans Ger-mans on assignment in the states began their journey in Denver and drove their mobile home, complete with camera equipment, ski gear and champagne, through many ..Colorado resorts, including in-cluding Aspen, Vail, Copper' Mountain' and 5 Steamboat Springs. They enjoyed skiing with Olympic medal winner Billy Kidd and are now sporting spor-ting his and Steamboat's trademark cowboy hats. After exploring and filming Park City, Alta and Snowbird, the crew will travel to Las Vegas (just for filming, of course) and the Grand Canyon. Then it's on to Taos, New Mexico for more skiing. The trip is being sponsored by K2, Nordica, Look, Carrera, Pan American Airlines and the United States Travel Service. The filmmakers and German travel agencies, anticipating reduced transatlantic air fares in the next year, are hyping American skiing. According to film editor Gogol Lobmayr, American ski resorts are much better organized than those in Germany. Instead of the orderly or-derly maze system used to feed U.S. skiers onto the lifts, lif-ts, German skiers filter into one small opening. Pushing, elbowing and line cutting are not only acceptable, they are a necessity. The more agressive and impatient skiers develop their shoving tactics into an art. Lobmayr also was impressed im-pressed by the clearly marked ski runs and the color coded ability levels posted for each run at our resorts. Lobmayr, Paul Gindele and Norbert Lutter are ski instructors on the weekends , in the.,,Bavarian,t.Alps., and i( ; although they sometimes see " powder frr Germany;' their J' snow is usually wetter and heavier. The whole crew felt the increased altitude in our mountains. Skiable summits in the Alps may be a few thousand feet higher than Park City's Jupiter Bowl, but the altitude of most mountain towns is several thousand feet lower. With the exception of Lobmayr, who filmed another ski movie at Vail two years ago, none of the crew had been to the United States before, but all of them speak enough English to get along. "The only trouble we have is with girls," said Lobmayr, laughing. He said the American women are easier to meet, but after that they are "too stiff, too proper. The German girls are better, more fun." Despite American beer being too light, mild and cold for their tastes, the crew said the hotels, restaurants and people were superb, and none of them were anxious for their January 15 departure depar-ture for Europe. Once back in Germany, cameraman Paul Gindele, assistant cameraman Rolf Greim and Lobmayr will begin filming a new series for Bavaria Altelier Television. Called "Tatort" (scene of the crime), the series will be a detective-mystery detective-mystery similar to Kojac. After that, the crew has hopes for a return visit to the United States for a summer review of the same ski areas they are visiting now. Maybe the American women will redeem themselves them-selves by then. If not, we can take comfort in the fact that our hamburgers are better. And they originated in Hamburg.
