Show Wednesday, December 14, 1977 THE Page 11 by Quicksilver It is generally fruitless to debate whether science fiction is a form of literature. The type of sci-fi this critic enjoys blends fact and fantasy in a provocative manner and leaves the reader with brain circuits humming. It seems as though an element of truth extended into the realm of fantasy fan-tasy is far more tantalizing then mere fantasy alone. Close Encounters of the Third Kind begins with a variation of an extremely interesting historical footnote such as the 1945 disappearance of an entire en-tire squadron of TBF Avenger Torpedo bombers. The planes and their crew seemed to vanish from the face of the earth as they were flying from the routine training mission. Not a single scrap of debris was ever found and the last radio message received from the squadron stated that they were lost in a storm and their compasses were going crazy. Suddenly the planes reappear, minus their crews, in the Mexican desert. The only witness to the event, a half-baked desert local, said the sun came out in the middle of the night and then it sang for him. A rash of UFO sightings are reported in Indiana In-diana In India, a large crowd of people start chanting a song given to them by something from the sky. Then a radiotelescope that had been sending the notes of the Indian chant receives signals from space describing a geographic location in Wyoming. It is taken to be an invitation to meet the aliens. ? Many of the special effects are modeled after descriptions given by people who claim to have been exposed to UFO's. The terror in the film is not just the terror of the unknown, but the knowledge that these fantastic events have some truth contained in them. The plausibility of the events makes many of the scenes all the more frightening. Steven Spielberg's production is replete with fantastic special effects and scarey soundtrack. The visuals are also quite beautiful, with fantastic fan-tastic light shows every time the UFO's are on the screen. Quite surprisingly, there are several glaring errors and moments when the high quality of production pr-oduction was not maintained. UFO tans shifted from one side of the face to the other in mid scene, and a broken window was miraculously and inexplicably repaired. The crowd scenes in the film were also handled poorly, as if Spielberg could not adequately control large groups of people. But these flaws were more than made up for by the generally high quality of acting. The cast, headed by Richard Dreyfuss (one of this critic's favorites since Duddy Kravitz) and Francois Trauffaut (the great French director), give a wide range of protrayals, from super analytical technocrat to highly emotional mother. When the scenes involved a small number num-ber of people they always worked. Spielberg also infused his own humor throughout the film, adding comic relief to scenes that could have become too ponderous. Dreyfuss, who has just experienced an encounter with an UFO, scares himself with his own flashlight. The radio telescope operators are so excited about receiving a message from space they destroy a thousand dollar globe in their haste to see where the directions lead. Even in some of the heaviest scenes Spielberg injects a one-liner. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a good reason to take sci-fi seriously. The film takes a question that has been in the minds of many people, handles the topic in an adult manner and answers no scientific questions. (It wasn't meant to!) It combines quite a bit of science with fine original fantasy and leaves the viewer with thoughts and images that will not fade away quickly. "I hate to read about emergy waste . . . because I pay a gas biU9 too." Dan DaBell is one of Mountain Fuel's 67 meter readers. Every day. he reads the meters and records the amount of natural gas used by homes in his service area. Often; he gets readings that differ greatly even in neighborhoods with practically identical homes occupied by families of similar size. To him that suggests that some people are not as careful as. others in their use of this precious natural resource. Open windows and doors, inadequate insulation, lack of caulking and frequent changes in thermostat setting are among the major contributing factors to a higher than average reading, therefore a higher than average gas bill. Dan, like the 1700 other people at Mountain Fuel Supply, is constantly working as efficiently as possible to provide you with all the natural gas service you need. You see, efficiency minimizes our Dan DaBell, Meter Reader costs... with the savings reflected in the bill you pay. Dan is concerned about efficiency, because after all, he pays the same for natural gas as you do. You can also help. Conservation is a way of minimizing your own fuel bill, while stretching out our existing supplies until new supplies are located. Locating new supplies is a necessity if we are to continue to bring you clean, efficient natural gas at i reasonable cost. MOUNTAIN FUEL People Serving People |
