In 1943 there were those odd bluish zinc coated pennies minted during the year that all the copper was being diverted toward the war effort (afterwards the unused shell cases were made back into pennies ) . The first U.S. coins were minted in the 1790s (the George Washington half-cents), half-cents), and it seems that the Continental Congress had trouble deciding how to centralize cen-tralize the currency. Up until then the U.S. used Irish, state and even personal coins. Doc also has a collection collec-tion of Korean coins dating back almost two thousand years. The downhill experience is not the exclusive realm of the alpine skier. While some alpine technique can be applied ap-plied to cross-country, the examiners explained and demonstrated, the more advanced ad-vanced Nordic downhill methods. The clinic's emphasis was on teaching. The participants were asked not only to demonstrate skiing proficiency, but each was provided opportunity to explain ex-plain it as well. The actual exams, scheduled for later this winter, will stress the teaching aspect of cross country skiing. The clinic itself is challenging and informative. infor-mative. The actual examination can be painfully pain-fully difficult and only about a third of the participants were invited to take the certification cer-tification exam next week. "It is unfair to let people drive long distances and pay for an examination they have little chance of passing," says Bob Rosso. In any event, most of the participants agreed that the clinic was a healthy eye-opener eye-opener to the complexities of teaching and skiing crosscountry. cross-country. Even for those of us who don't intend to teach the sport, these clinics provide an excellent format for learning learn-ing cross-country. Like its alpine counterpart, Nordic skiing provides ample opportunity op-portunity for personal enjoyment en-joyment through greater proficiency. Here is a lifetime sport enjoyed by skiers at all ability levels. The schedule for future ISIA clinics is as follows: Jackson, Wyoming January Jan-uary 14, 15, and 16; Park City, Utah March 9, 10, 11, and 12.
