The human aspect as-pect or the "spirit" of the event does not showup. Take three separate compe titions that took place over the labor day weekend, for example. Although Helen Marcellin, Kerry Gunderson, and Erin Bolton were winners in their respective divisions at the "Beauty Contest" held Sunday Sun-day at the new high school, it was the fidgeting, gum-chewing gum-chewing girls, those elementary-aged tykes who respond to the question of 'why they were there' with "My mommy said I had to" that gave the event its spirit. And in the Demolition Derby it was Art's Body Shop of Heber City that walked away with the 1st place hardware, but, once again, we have a couple of happenings that, "spirit-wise" "spirit-wise" transcended the final outcome. First of all, there was "Bulldog" Benson, also known as Kenny Binetina, and his chariot, one of the most beautiful pieces of "iron" ever to hit the old "steelyard." "Bulldog" won his heat but battery problems prob-lems stopped him in the finals. But, of course, it wasn't his heat victory that earned him a place in this article, but his overall "style" which was superb. su-perb. Wayne "Wall, of Fire" Putman has been in the local Demo-Derby Hall of Fame since his famous "head dip" antics during the derby held at Kimball Junction (across the freeway from Ernie's) back in 72. This was the same event that featured the Reverend "Dirty Mertz" iragging the fence around the arena. This year, however, how-ever, ol' Wayne simply outdid himself. Due to some problem with the car, the hay bales burned for what seemed like ten minutes before Wayne, prone on the hood of the car, and driver Doug made their entrance. They were to waste no more time, however, how-ever, as they immediately lined up and blasted through the "Wall of Fire." Instantly the plot thickened as both the interior of the car and the exterior of Wayne became engulfed with flaming hay. With the car about in the middle of the arena and traveling in a westerly direction. direc-tion. Driver Doug abandoned ship. With heroic sweeping strokes, Wayne, still on the hood of his driverless fireball fire-ball knocked the remaining burning bales off of himself as the car crashed into the far end of the arena. The crowd, in a frenzied, non-believing panic gave our hero a huge ovation after he jumped jump-ed free and signaled he was all right. Both Wayne and Doug suffered slight burns and much singed hair. This was the "spirit" of the "Demo-Derby." Meanwhile, back at the Softball diamond, Park City's Ci-ty's Fifth Annual Slow-Pitch Softball tournament (with an a not an e) was taking place. The bottom line here was Spencer's Auto's triumph over Colorado Springs' Hatch Cover, last year's winner. But the (here's that word again) "spirit" of the tourney was provided by that beautifully crazy, rowdy bunch of weirdos, thrown together like a patch-quilt, known as "Big Shot Construction." Con-struction." Refusing to believe be-lieve the unofficial seeding, which had them at least 11th, they whipped almost everyone every-one they faced, just missed making the finals ( losing by one to the Hatch Cover in the seventh inning) and finished third.
