"You can t however, since Webber-Rice are holding them- have a rock opera about Jesus Christ!" Nobody selves incommunicado, there are really no could believe it. But, Let me give you a hint as to the subject ot tne putting aside charges of blasphemy, Andrew latest Webber-Rice project : Immediately upon Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice gave the world its release, Lvita was banned in Uganda. something they seemed to have wanted all along: "Jesus Christ Superstar." It sold millions of records and hundreds of thousands of theatre tickets to the stage and movie versions. Webber 'Uganda," shouted Webber and Rice, "How shall we become famous in Uganda?" You guessed it! "Idi Amin," everyone will say, "You can't and Rice were applauded: How innovative, how have a rock opera about Idi Amin!" Well, that's profound, how indicitive of the new-old spirituality. Webber and Rice were rich. The opera was an immediate international smash, playing to capacity audiences in about every country on earth except Argentina. "Argentina," shouted Webber and Rice, "How shall we become famous in Argentina?" Well, now we know. "Evita," a rock opera about the life of all people.Eva Peron was unveiled un-veiled in album form in New York around the first of the year. Eva Duarte Peron, second wife of Argentine Dictator Juan Peron, had been brought back to life by Webber-Rice. Now they damn well better play this one in Argentina. "Evita" was, and is, a serious, entertaining, hard rock, not always flattering look at a woman who rose dramatically from less than respectable respec-table beginnings to be revered by her "shirtless ones" and hated by the army and aristocracy. "Evita" was structured more for staging than "Superstar" and, according to music writer Tom Jory, Webber-Rice are currently working toward that end. One would have thought that as successful a composer-lyrisist team as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice would sit back and enjoy the fruits of their latest labors. Not so, according to a source sour-ce nestled deep within the concrete caverns of the Universal City Plaza in Los Angeles. This is where MCA Records, the label which relased "Evita", is headquartered. My primary source on this ex clusive story is Jeff Lyman who headed MCA's promotion departments in Denver and Atlanta before being named "El Jefe" of their national country promotion. That's right, country! "Idi-ut," "Idi-ut," as the new musical will be entitled, is not only a rock opera, it is a country-rock opera. The idea occurred to Rice when he was in Kampala doing research for the project. One of Amin's personal bodyguards supposedly referred to him as a "Good old boy." With none of the opera's songs yet in wax, smuggled microfilm of the hand written sheet music is all we have to go on. Demonstrating a total disregard for his own safety, Lyman was able to obtain a partial scenario of "Idi-ut" for the Newspaper. Had Jeff's involvement been discovered by his superiors, he quite possibly could have lost everything he has been working for, including his razor cut and expense account. Well here's what it looks like: The ever mercurial, mer-curial, in the tempermental sense, Amin shares singing parts in the opening act with Milton Obote, from whom "Idi-ut" seized power in 1971. "Git along little doggie" is the main aria and is interwoven throughout the entire work. Amin sings it to those "Ranch Hands" who, for one reason or another tend to disagree with him. The microfilm disclosed a couple of other confirmed roles. One is sung by Queen Elizabeth, from whom Amin wrests control of the British Commonwealth Com-monwealth in the Third act. Mwanda, son of "Idi-ut" and next in line for foreman of his daddy's dad-dy's spread, sings "I Love My Rancho 'Ganda". We'll just have to wait until it's released to get further information. Lyman refused to speculate beyond the scant information on the microfilm, although he did characterize the late Anglican Archbishop of Uganda, the most Reverend Nanani Luwum, as having a "carry-off role rather than a "Walk-on." "Walk-on." As absurd as this entire scene is, it could, of course, get even worse. Imagine, if you will, what might transpire if, say, they decide to ban "Idi-ut" in San Clemente. "San Clemente," will most probably shout Webber and Rice, "How shall we become famous in San Clemente?" P.C. Racers Place High At Nationals Two young Park City ski racers returned from the Junior National Races at Alyeska, Alaska last week with some exceptional results. Competing against the best junior racers in the country, Roxanne Toly placed fifth in a slalom and eighth in a downhill. Teammate Karri Hays finished fifth in the second downhill and 12th in the first downhill race. Both racers returned to Park City on Monday in time for a benefit dinner held at the Eating Establishment to raise funds for their trip. GO ALMOST ALL THE WAY MAKE IT A NEAR KILL NIGHT by Quicksilver There should be a great deal of local interest in The Melvin Dummar Story as the film chronicles the rags to riches story of a fellow Utahn. Although there are several quirks and inconsistencies incon-sistencies in the flick, the movie provides one of the most entertaining evenings one could hope for. Perhaps most important is the realization that the story is based entirely on fact, and the incidents portrayed really did occur. The film opens with the now famous encounter on the desert, as Dummar (played by Robert DeNiro) picks up a ragged, old hitchhiker. Kind hearted Melvin takes the man to Las Vegas and "lends" him some money. The old man promises to pay him back, then adds with a wry smile, "with interest." The scene then shifts to the World Headquarters Headquar-ters of the Mormon Church, where the film's first inconsistency takes place. After Howard Hughes' death his will is discovered at the headquarters and it names both Dummar and the LDS Church recipients of a large protion of the billion dollar inheritance. Unfortunately, instead of showing Salt Lake City and the LDS Office Building, the director chose to shoot the footage at an East Orange, New Jersey store front church. This inconsistency inconsisten-cy is further compounded by the secretary who finds the will written with a thick yiddish accent, already. The president of the church is a bit more believable, as he resembles an Irish Catholic priest. Of course, people who have never been to Utah would never know the difference. dif-ference. The action switches back to Southern Utah where Dummar and his brother Billy are poor gas station operators, being inundated by reporters, repor-ters, charity organizations, and yacht salesmen hoping to cash in on Melvin's new fortune. But in court, Melvin begins to see a conspiracy developing to deprive him of his fortune. Lawyers call the will a fraud, and produce a second will naming Harry Shmirk and the B'nai Brith as the main beneficiaries. The signature on the will appears to be forged and Dummar's fingerprint is found on the envelope. Melvin suddenly switches his story. He now claims that he saved a man on the desert from a bear who was angry because the man did not repay a loan. Melvin repaid the bear and the old man shook his hand and told Dummar he'd be paid back "with interest." (This is the film's second inconsistency, as Dummar actually claimed he saved the man from a coyote. But 'bears are a bigger box office draw than coyotes. Just when it looks as though Melvin is going to be cheated out of his fortune, John Lennon bursts into the courtroom, waving a copy of Abbey Road. Just play side two backwards, he explains, and you will hear Howard Hughes' last will and testament. Sure enough, the will comes right after af-ter "Paul is dead." At this point the film either broke or ended. An old man next to me asked if I would lend him some money for popcorn claiming he'd pay me back "with interest," but I punched him in the mouth and left.
