Park Ojy, THE ilflBBBpi Park City, Utah 533 Main Street 649 0431 1 Order note Christmas Cardo across rom City Hall) Hankerings by Quest Writer Meg O'Shaughnesiy Well, if we hadn't been prepared, we had, at least, been titillated. Woke up to a rumor of snew and headed out up Main Street to score a cup of java, kicking a can along the way into the jaws of an eager retriever who taught us the trick. Not to wake the sleeping house with out of towners arrived 5 a.m. for The Feast (Come to think on't now, we'd never heard it once referred to otherwise.) By the time we bounced on a black coffee buzz back home, it was gettin' on. Stand up huggable folks from bygone days and holidays greeted us awake and there was talk of a soccer game. Suddenly we were bringing in the pearl onions and vermouth we'd left in the car, having been waylaid in early celebration on the way back from market the evening before. A quiche, the cub's wizzardry, was slid into the oven and the guys were off to the rugby field. "Lagers? " intoned Dobson, he looked to be carrying a case from somewhere. Ah it was but noon or so. We stayed to ramble on, as ladies will, and passed somehow the hours till three. Bear and us. Just good girl talk. Thank you, sister. Hey, it's time to get cookin'. Let's see now Bechamel, Steamed Onions, mmm. Ah sweet vermouth r- a dash of worstershire. Hey, tamari? Hey go for it. Dobson giggling. ? "The color." Roxanne's on candied yams. She and Dobson combing Joy's glossary for par. He and Bear brought pies. "It's the last thing they eat and they never know the difference." We're on our way. Half the company on foot searching the sky. Thinner there, some blue. Now over there...Up the stairs. Doors open to hints of elegance. A blonde fox wearing Black Velvet stirs eggnog in a punchy bowl. A golden toned bird tastefully dressed, can be seen through the glass (looking good enough to eat.) What can we do Em? Hey you want to baste that turkey? You bet. Eying the eggnog. Turned on to the cooling Heinekens on the porch. Hey is, this stuff real? ' Better beleive it. Across the border goods. Alright. Hey there. Hi. Hello. Great day, Huh? Yeah. Snow. Blah, blah, blah. Clink. Hors D'oeurves. Come on. '.Where are the cameras?Herbal coctails adrift in ihe kitchen. Coming back to the trays of colorful vegetables. Quietly raving the tiny stuffed tomatoes. But its all fine to look at. Everybody,, braced against a wall. Saving up. Focus. Behind us all there is a curtain drawn to the chamber beyond. A red candle stands tall on a stand. Sentry. No peeking. This Heineken is heady grog or a naturalized Utahn. We can feel ourselves enjoying some" holiday color in the cheeks. Two beers? Someone begins to carve. The gravy is pronounced fini. The hour has arrived. We Wish we could remember the sequence of sense impressions that followed. First the image. A glimpse of lush color. An opium den exotica. Extravagance of chandeliers and bright Indian cloth. We're stepping in stockin' feet on cushions around a huge banquet table, making our way to a cozy place. Its all there. Roasted turkeys, trimmings, breads, salads, mince meat pie, copious vino. We're all just flashing looks of high incredulity at our neighbors and the bright eyes across the table. It may have started with a toast. We know there was a respectful note of some kind aloft in that moment when breaths were drawn and forks held poised. A chorus in rounds of 'gravy' 'bread' 'cranberries' filled, the banquet hall, in the opening phase and then,' as first tastes sated at least anticipation, a contented, rippling murmur spread itself. Faces lifted to share smiles, and reflect the candles' warm glow; over sips of wine. Eyebrows inclined, eyes half closed. An eloquent facial thumbs up. The host and hostess, progenitors of this good cheer watched the animation of the scenario they had so meticulously prepared. Alias, alias Booch, was truly in a trance, (the candles maybe more dazzling to his open eyes?) taking it all in. A family portrait framed in sublime convivialty. It rolled on. We leaned back. Outside now the snow, become a legend, began, oh so timely to float in flakes. Inside, hey let it snow let it snow let it snow. We're loving it. Trying to fix the scene in our liquid memories. Being there. Letting go. The Feast. We understand everything now. No ordinarly turkey day this. Early on, or was it halfway through the mashed potatoes, we had the space to think of grace. Ah yes we missed a good high there but we were all tied together at the knees and our spirits soaring lofty enough to deliver a nod. Thanksgiving.
