Precinett Fiv Selhiool IBoard Pat ;Va'nWagoh'r Arshq Priimeo This is a critical period for Park City schools the community is experiencing rapid growth and many demands are going to be made on the school system. I believe , that Park City and I want to see them become an example of quality education in a small school district. But the potential will never be reached unless school board members keep abreast to what is happening in our schools, stay well-informed of new possibilities in education, educa-tion, and are in close contact with the community. Because Be-cause I feel both capable and qualified to do these things, I am running for . the School ' Board. I am active in the school system. I am Chairman of the Marsac School Community Commun-ity Council, a member of the Park City Community Council, Coun-cil, and am both the coordinator and a leader in the Great Books program. I ' was Regional Director for the State P.T.A. last year and was recently on the planning committee for a National Community Education Workshop held at Snowbird. Both of these experiences were tremendously beneficial ' in furthering my understanding understand-ing about some aspects of today's educational- processes, pro-cesses, t am firmly committ- Ltai t h iincept ft publisi fstem, and as a. Al IT don't have and won t have all the answers to people s questions and concerns about the schools but to the best of my ability I would try -to find the answers or refer the questioner to .someone urliA Miild knlti Ka4-tn titan T Park City is relatively Ismail, Precinct Sis small. ml . a1 I inai is one 01 tne large pluses of the area and the School Board should be responsive to the community ..basis. '.' . J am running for the School ; Board because I am concern-; concern-; ed about the education of our tuiiuivii aiiu niv luvuiv ui wi school district. Among my specific concerns is improved . . i . it. - communication Detween tne community, faculty, admin- . . 1 i i a mL istration, ana siuuenis. me scnooi community councils are one means of achieving ; this. One of the most damaging things I have encountered in Park City is the gossip, hearsay, and rumors about the schools. As a Sfhnni Knnrri member. 1 1 I would waqt to meet period-j period-j ically with the superinten- dent, the principals, and the ' teachers and also with the Park City High School - Student Council to hear ' firsthand about their : concerns and problems as ;' well as their successes. ; Another area of concern is in the ' curriculum, particularly partic-ularly at the high school level. I would like to expand the opportunities for our bright high school students t to take advanced courses, ,. perhaps in conjunction with :. area colleges. I would discuss ? textbooks with the teachers to be sure, they are both ' current and excellent' in the subject ana. Park City is unique in the diversity of the I population we should draw - on this source of talent to ' supplement the curriculum in ' both schools. To facilitate the maximum number of students participating in 1 after school activities, I -would investigate the feasibility feas-ibility of art activities bus which would drop off bussed , students late in the afternoon. after-noon. When parents sent their children out of the district to school for other than preferring prefer-ring a parochial or private school, that is a problem which should not be ignored. If parents feel that negatively negative-ly about the Park City schools, the District should find out why through follow-up follow-up interviews with the parents. It may suggest a real problem area. There should be a continuous continu-ous effort to upgrade the (library facilities in the schools. If the school budget will not allow the purchase of many new books, I would urge local fundraisers by citizen groups to raise the necessary money. I would also express continued strong support for the Summit County Bookmobile. Discipline is a problem that comes up in every discussion about the schools. . Unfortunately, Unfor-tunately, the conversations are usually generalized and specifics are often not identified. identi-fied. Firm guidelines regarding regard-ing acceptable behavior must be set. I would encourage meetings between school , authorities and parents of children involved in problem behavior, and would also encourage periodic student group discussions in both schools about self respect and respect for others, courtesy, peer pressure for .ccptaWeDebiwABdth.ow There is the on-going problem of having a large percentage of our Park City residents residing outside the boundaries of the Park City School District. This is an intolerable situation, and as the population booms outside out-side the School District boundaries, it becomes even ' more intolerable. I would work with the legislators to get these boundary lines changed, then with the county commissioners to have the precinct lines of the School District redrawn so that School Board representation represen-tation more accurately reflects the population. ' I would like to see greater school spirit among the students and the community. This necessitates a group effort to accentuate the positive about our schools, support school events, and encourage students to participate partic-ipate in school activities. Because so many! children are. bussed, sometimes in very hazardous weather and road conditions, I am concerned con-cerned about bus safety. I' would investigate the procedure proced-ure of how bus drivers are hired and trained, how new buses are purchased, and how the fleet of buses is maintained. . These are just some of my concerns, not necessarily listed in order of priority. We should never be content with mediocrity,' but should always strive to be better. A School Board member in 1976 must be willing to work hard and study hard, must maintain close communication communica-tion with both school personnel person-nel and the community, and should be active in the schools and the community. I meet all these criteria. I have a Master of Arts degree in English Literature, .and professionally am an editor and" technical writer. The latter has afforded me extensive experience in working work-ing with people. Having been brought up in New England, then having lived in Michigan Mich-igan and briefly in Salt Lake, I have seen the operations of several school districts first hand. I now live in Summit l'ark with my husband and two sons. I have lived in the Park City school district for thirteen years. All of my children, in i grades twelve, nine, six, and three, attend Park City schools. I have been actively involved involv-ed in . civic and school projects since moving here. One on my . early involvements involve-ments was as a member of the Park City Community Park committee. I was secretary, treasurer of this committee under the chairmanship chair-manship of Bud Gasparac. Our small group, with many, many hours of volunteer work, raised funds to obtain a building, install restrooms, build a tennis court, and plant grass, making a park for the community. I have worked in the Girl Scouts as a district organizer, organiz-er, neighborhood chairman, and a leader. I've been a den mother for Cub Scouts. I have been a member of the board of directors of the Park City Chamber of Commerce 'and organized the first "ski kick-off dinner." I was elected PTA president in 1972 and initiated ' the school volunteer program. I acted as chairman of the Concerned Citizens Action Group in our successful fight against consolidation by the Utah legislature of the Park City, North Summit, and South Summit school districts. dist-ricts. , '"' I am currently on the board of trustees of the Kimball 'Art Center secretary) of the Park City Sehool.Commun-ity Sehool.Commun-ity Council,' and a volunteer teacher's aid. I would speak out with questions, quest-ions, ideas, and observations from my participation in the schools. I believe our schools, in Park City and across tjie country, have been too permissive in the past few years. I would support a more traditional education. This includes discipline enforced en-forced with parental participation partici-pation and involvement when needed, stressing the need for good work habits,-, respect and courtesy. . I would stress continued up-grading of curriculum. I think new programs should be researched but not necessarily accepted just because they are "new." ; We must petition the Utah legislature to realign our school district to include all the children attending park. City schools. The present boundaries deprive a large number of parents of Park City school children of a voice in the education of their children. We must initiate proceed ings to realign the l'ark City voting precincts. One of the greatest contributions I could make to my comm unity would be promoting superior education of our youth. A school board should aspire to create an education- . al environment that will encourage the unique individual development of each student, instilling a desire to question, and grow and to have a sense of pride and purpose in life. To make intelligent decisions on issues that arise the duties of a school board official should extend beyond attending the regular meetings. In order to obtain an all around view of the school system, time must be spent visiting the classrooms, class-rooms, talking to students, teachers and parents, first hand. A school board member should have an understanding understand-ing of people. I have had varied experiences working with people of all ages. My years as City Recorder have helped me in understanding under-standing School financing and record keeping. Although, Cities and School Districts differ in many 'tte!pilireserVelitlh6s1 'btfsrc fundamental principles that have made Utah a great place to live and raise a family. The year 1977 will be a year of important dicisions for the residents of this district as well as the state. Those decisions will require leadership ability as well as experience. We now have better than twenty four million in surplus sur-plus revenue in the state. Although this speaks well for the economy of our state it should also be a signal that our people are entitled to a tax break in some form. We , need -to reform our Inheritance Inheri-tance Tax structure. We need either to raise the exemptions exemp-tions or to lower the percent on which we pay on our jncome tax. We need to provide some relief for our ' retirees and those on fixed incomes. . ' f We are in the process -of RprsQiHttatiivQ 4& Board! ways, they are similar in many others, and have many common problems. I would like to take part in the dedication of our New High School and in establishing a new middle school for the 6th, 7th, and eighth grade children. I feel the latter is something we have needed for many years, i I am retired and a recent widow, so I have a great deal of tim to devote to the schools I feel we have made progress in improving Community; Com-munity; Relations this year and 1 1 hope to see more progress in this regard in the future. " , . We, ' in the educational system, Teachers, Board bers, and Administrators, must work harmoniously with one another, and with the parents, to provide the best possible education for all children. This should be our first and main concern. . I will appreciate your vote on Nov. 2, thank you. re-negotiating our Bear River contract with Wyoming and Idaho! This will take some serious decision making to put the water to a beneficial use. We must develop a state wide energy and conservation conserva-tion plan that will provide us with the maximum use of our natural resources compatable with our environment. This will be a year of decision in providing the proper education for our children. Vital decisions have to be made regarding the development develop-ment and use of the Great Salt Lake. These are but a few of the many' programs and decisions that must be made during the next legislature. Edison Stephens feels qual-idied qual-idied and would like to continue to represent your wishes in making these decisions. |
