But it was that gold mine 1 that enabled him to make a string of films that has created one of the most fanactical group of fans ever to follow a director. His latest film, Bullalo Bill and the Indians, will easily satisfy his devotees while mystifying those who consider Altman a one shot wash out director. It is doubtful that Buffalo BiU will be the financial success Altman would like to insure his independence in-dependence from the studios and his enviable total control over the films he directs. But Altman is determined to make films his way rather than look for a 'commercial" venture that is "bound" to succeed. Robert Altman is an artist who prefers his status as a rebel director to the security of commercial filmaking. , The cutting edge of Robert Altaian's talent has always been his sense of humor: the operating room of an Army field hospital was never considered a tasteful situation for comedy, but eccentric doctors in MASH quickly demolished that taboo with their poinient but halarious portrayals of humans dealing with the true spoils of war. The films that followed MASH all shared the unconventional wit of Altman. His humor ranges from the sight gags and throwaway lines of Brewster McCloud to the dry parody of the "cool" detective in The Long Goodby. Whether the film was meant to be a comedy or a serious drama there was always the same unique type of humor that first emerged in MASH. Many of the devices used in previous flicks are present in Buffalo Bill and the Indians. One often sees strange occurences in the background of the film, while the main characters, blightly unaware of the action surrounding them, act upon the latest whirlwind of events that has occupied their attention. Therre is no set timetable to the comedy. No predictable pattern or level of humor in the film, It can be as subtle as a glance or as blatent as a loudspeaker. loud-speaker. Altaian's visual style and multi-track audio are blended to provide a statical look at America on her 200th birthday. , William Cody's portrayal in the film does not seem very sympathetic. Buffalo Bill is shown as a man who proved fruitless, he only wanted to live his life with the Indian nation he loved. He was a selfless leader of men. Buffalo Bill and the Indians does not claim to be a historical fiam. Rather it is an allegory about the state of America today. It is made by a man who refuses to do the audience's work for them. His films are multi level, complex affairs that are often imperfect, but satifying. Robert Altaian's latest film shows that he deserves his followers and his reputation as one of America's finest directors. v. - f AN IPIp)D IFfeb? There are complex "this's" and "that's", for almost everything we do. However, in a bulletin recently released by the Sport Fishing Institute, it was revealed that research has identified the primary reason most people go fishing is because they like to catch fish. Too simple? No, it's true. The fact was backed up by several , independent studies in various parts of the country. Those studies did show that other considerations were also important to the overall fishing experience. Any Izaak Walton described fishing as "The Contemplative Con-templative Man's Recreation." Herbert Hoover asserted; that, "The reason for it all is that fishing is fun and good for the soul of man." William D. Ruckelshaus, keynoting the recent National Bass Symposium asserted that,"People fish to catch fish, not necessarily to keep them, but to catch them." Further studies indicate that increased restrictive regulations on fishing techniques and creel limits influence the number of ' participants. As I Photo: PalttcOowtU TEAM P.C. He, in essence, created the first Madison Avenue advertising agency. By contrast, the myth surrounding Sitting Bull is far , larger than the man appears to be. But Sitting Bull is someone who can separate his legend from reality. He used his legend to the advantage of his people rather than personal gain. He is a leader and a statesman who is a far bigger man than his legend. It is not his image that he cares about, but whether or not he can provide for his tribe. The rest of the characters in Buffalo Bill provide archtypes of people who are common today. The runty but efficient partner Nate does Cody's dirty work without flinching. Cody's' nephew provides little service to anyone and is usually given meaningless jobs to keep him out of the way. There is even an old soldier who has similar symptoms as Cody, but is satisfied retelling his story to young children rather than the paying customers that flock to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The people portrayed in the film could be a cross-section of Americans that surround us daily. Perhaps that is why Altman mystifies somany people. His films are chronicles of people rather than events Buffalo Bill hinges not on plot but on the development of the characters that interact in the film. Most directors hang their actors on a "clothesline" where people can easily see their development. Altman throws his actors into a "dryer" and reveals their quirks and habits by letting them tumble forward into view, then recede while another actortumblesforward. Add his meandering plots with his often slow pace and multi-track sound mixing, and it becomes clear why Altman has not found a larger audience. ' Still Buffalo Bill and the Indians is a refreshing look at America on her 200th birthday. William Cody's orginization manufactured myths about their leader that no one could possible live up to. Not only do the people who see the wild west show believe the impossible, im-possible, but Cody must try to live up to the stories. Today Americans are being fed with so many retorical advertisements created by Madison Avenue that people are forgetting the sadder aspects of her history. It's true that the United States has had some harsh blows to the national ego this past decade, and the country needs some reassurance. But if like Cody, America fails to practice some careful introspection, this country is likely to once again find herself in a ' Situation created by pverconf idence that was sired by the desire to believe in the American myths. Watching the Wild West Shows carefully development develop-ment of Cody's image is also a lesson in seeing a man. Buffalo Bill would tell history the way the crowd would accept it rather than the way it occured. The packaging of the show and the acts that it contained were designed to develop a carefully cultivated legend. Today, most polititions would rather run for re-election on their images than their deeds, and that image is often the only thing the people know (or want to find out.) Often an election is decided by an ad agency. On the other hand, Sitting Bull portrayed a vanishing breed, the statesman. He hoped to further his people's plight by talking with another statesman, the President of the United States. He was willing to degrade himself for the opportunity of a meeting that he felt would help his people. Once the meeting . After all is said and done, whether fish are frying in the not, one,. fact, people like to fish fishine: Fishing offers a therapeutic , experience, offering relief from the nerve-racking Technical society of America. Anglers may seek, to isolate them-, selves in a shady cove, or they may seek the sociality of being with a group of friends. The sport also provides a combination of recreation and economic value. Many fishermen in the previously mentioned surveys indicated that the quality of the table fare was an important consideration in their fishing J activities. And, of course, 7 there is the everpresent challenge of landing the elusive brown trout the aged bucketmouth or a trophy sized salt water game fish. ; The reasons why fishing is so popular in America remains ambigous. It has . been a part of living, however, for a long time. THIS WEEK'S GAMES Wednesday: P.C. Ventures vs. Old Men, 6 O'Briens vs. Alpine Cbib, 7: 15 Sunday: O'Briens vs. Sirloin Saloon, 12 00 P.C.
