The British Broadcasting Corp. quoted the Angolan News Agency as reporting in Luanda, the Angolan capital, that the American man was Daniel Gearhart, 34, of Kensington, Md. The men were executed by a firing squad. Paris French farmers fed bananas to cows, Danish authorities made it illegal to water lawns and British brew masters warned of a possible shortage of their brew last week as Europe's worst drought in generations continued. Although there were some signs of relief in the multi-billion-dollar drought recently, a heat wave now in its third week continued to sear the continent. The worst drought in some countries in 250 years caused crops to perish- and starving livestock to be slaughtered. . NATIONAL Washington The 1976 federal budget deficit could be $9 billion less than estimated three months ago, government officials revealed last week. . Reasons cited for deficit's reduction included the Ford administration's overestimate of expenditures and the lowering of the interest rates. Although budget figures for fiscal 1976 will not be released for another week one official said the deficit could be as low as $68 billion, down from the $76.9 billion estimated by the Office of Management and Budget in March. United Natiqns, N.Y, Isarel defended its daring military rescue operation in Uganda before the Security Council last week by offering to provide evidence of Ugandan President Idi Amin's cooperation with the air hijackers. . Appearing in an interview on the NBC "Today ; Show" Israeli Ambassador Chaim Herzog said,"It is auite clear they were accomplices...We have a right and duty by international law to protect our citizens.. .as long as we do not overstay our welcome." New York A man jumped from the 22nd floor of a Manhattan hotel Tuesday took his own life and that of an unsuspecting motorist as he landed on the roof of the victims car. William Friedland, 25, walked into the Kenmore Hotel on Lexington Avenue at 23rd Street and went directly to the 22nd floor, police reported. Several blocks away, Frank Kr evens, 57, of Seaf ord, N.Y. finished a visit to Bellevue Hospital and joined his brother, sister, sister-in-law, and son for a ride to the offices of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., to arrange final details on his mother's life insurance. She had died a few weeks before. V Police said that just before 1 p.m. Friedland plunged out the window as the Krevans auto stopped for a light. Friedland landed on the roof of the auto, crushing it. Friedland and Krevans were both killed on the spot. The other four passengers in the Krevans vehicle were not seriously hurt. Long Beach Mrs. Pat Nixon, wife of former president Richard Nixon, was listed in serious condition con-dition Thursday after suffering from a stroke which impaired her speech and weakened the left side of her body. The 64 year old former first lady was rushed to the Long Beach Memorial Hospital, 50 miles northwest of her home in San Clemente after complaining of weakness in her left side. Her husband and daughter, Mrs. Julie Eisenhower, were along side her in the ambulance. Mr. Nixon is expected to spend 10 days in the car-, car-, diac care unit for diagnostic studies and treatment. Washington Thirteen Marine recruits have died in the past five years from injuries, heart attacks and other accidents as a result of training, Rep. Les Aspin, D-Wis., revealed last week. Fourteen Army recruits died while training during the same period, Aspin added, but noted that they send 240,000 recruits through basic training each year, compared with the Marine's 60,000. Another 12 Marines lost their lives from drowning, suicide or other causes while excaping or on "unauthorized absence" from Marine Recruit Depots, Aspin said. 1 Pentagon statistics also showed that during the past four years 249 Marine recruits have been injured during boot camp training and hospitalized for an average of 23.7 days. Miami Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis said last week that Jack Ruby met in Havana with Fidel Castro 10 weeks before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and discussed "removal of the President" along with arms purchases for Cuba and smuggling of illicit drugs into the United States. In a telephone interview, Sturgis added that he "and other agents" passed that information on to various government agencies early in 1964, before the Warren Commission completed its hearings, but is uncertain whether the information was ever made available to the commission. Although Sturgis refused to say what agency he was working for during his Cuban investigation, records indicate he was working for the CIA at that time. that Lee Harvey Oswald and Ruby who snot Oswald while he was in police custody in Dallas, "were involved in-volved in the same conspiracy, along with other . people." ' "Castro was furious" when he learned that the U.S. government was ploting to assassinate him, according to the former CIA agent. New York Former President Richard M. Nixon was ordered disbarred last week in the state of New York. The order came as a result of a state appeals court, which ruled on obstruction of justice charges brought by the city bar association. Nixon who had previously resigned from the California bar, refused to defend himself in New York. STATE FARM FIRE AND CASUALTY COMPANY Home Office: Bloomington, Illinois ByJayMeehan The release of a new Waylon Jennings LP has become a news event during the last few years, and most "outlaw" music fans have been anxious to see . now he would follow up the hugely successful ; Dreaming My Dreams. It was reported in this space previously, (Music ? Notes May 5, 1976) during an interview with 1 Waylon's drummer Richie Albright, that there was a - good possibility NeilYoung's Are You Ready For The Country would be the LP's initial single release. Well, as it turned out last week, it's also the name of the album. The new Jennings effort was released last Tuesday. John Ryland, Promotion Director for Polydor-Mercury-MGM-RSO in Denver and a good , friend from my days at KMOR, dropped by the RCA - office in that city picked up a copy, and caught a plane, and flew into SLC that very evening. Now that's service! He also happened to have 33 other albums i released on various labels during the last couple of months, so I should have plenty of material for future , columns. ' . V The title cut is a country rocker which features some fine bottleneck-steel interplay and should serve to broaden Waylon's appeal even more. In Them Old . Love Songs, a Donnie Fritts-Troy Seals composition, Ken Mansfield, who co-produced the album with Waylon, begins to make his presence filt. Along with the low-end (drums-bass) so long associated with Waylon's sound, is a lilting string sound provided by Ralph Mooney's steel guitar, but at times resembling . a dobro or a slide guitar. - Waylon has three of his own tunes on the album: the ""country blues So Good Woman which has Moons full 1 steel sound, the down tempo I'll Go Back to Her and Old Friend. The latter is a tribute to Buddy Holly, in a similar vein to Waylon's last two biographical ditties, dit-ties, Are You Sure Hank Done It This A-Way and Bob ' : Wills Is Still the King. The only difference here being the fact that Waylon played bass with the "Crickets" "and was a good friend and co-songwriter with Buddv I Holly. Waylon reflects on all that has gone down since Holly's tragic death in a plane crash with J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) and young Richie Valens in 1959. After telling Buddy about the changes in the world, music, and himself, Waylon sings: "Old friend we sure have missed you, But you ain't missed a thing" . -C, Daniel Moore's Jack A Diamonds features some . aocQustic guitar-"chkkwv piekin" and a great dobro - like byi'MoonlMfl by-Toy Caldwell of Hhe'Marshall Thicker Band builds from a soft ac-cousfic ac-cousfic intro to a full blown country-rocker. If any Waylon fans out there would like an example of how his voice and ability to read a lyric have grown, just get a hold of Jenning's 1966 recording of the great Jimmy Webb classic MacArthur Park and listen to it with MacArthur Park (revisited) from this new LP. The arrangement is more together also, with Moon's pedal steel handling the string section parts. Graham Nash of CSN&Y fame proves his harmony superior to his past lead vocal efforts as he joins Waylon on the final chorus. A Couple More Years, penned by Shel Silverstein and friend Dennis Locorriere of Dr. Hook, is a creatively constructed country song and a perfect vehicle for a singer like Waylon. The traditional Precious Memories winds up the album on a very tasty note. The arrangement used; especially the guitar line, is evidence that the electric Mr. Jennings is still a J.J. Cale fan. If you'd like to hear Waylon Jennings Are You Ready For The Country during the next few days drop by the Utah Coal and Lumber Bar. : A few other recent albums deserve at least passing mention here. Billy Ross of the above mentioned watering hole lent me his copy of Billy Joe Shaver's When I Get My Wings and it's fantastic. One of the best of the new "cowboy poets" Shaver is now on Capricorn and is joined by a bunch of those Macon, Georgia pickers including Dickie Betts. . - Chester and Lester is the title of a great guitar instrumental in-strumental album on RCA by Chet Atkins and Les Paul. It is somewhat in the tradition of the Chet Atkins Merle Travis LP of a couple of years ago, but of course showcases the great style of Les Paul. ! Local music buffs ought to remember a few years . back when a folk-singer named Guthrie Thomas came through town. Well, its now three albums later for Guthrie, the last two on Capitol. Lies and Alibies features Ringo Starr on drums and vocals along with John Hartford, Steve Cropper Renee Armand and all star cast. Led by Allen Terry's four trys in three games, the Park City Muckers finished fourth in the Steamboat Springs Cow-pie Rugby Classic this past weekend. The Park City side played . consistent rugby in besting clubs from Breckenridge and Boulder, Colorado. Their only loss was to the eventual tournament champion .Denver Barbarians. - ' In the consolation bracket championship game Mucker backline mainstays Skip ' Schirf and Scott Thompson set up both of Terry's trys with jarring tackles. The Muckers scored first and held the lead throughout the contest, but were never able to put the contest out of reach of the Colorado side. Breckenridge pressure, coupled with Park City penalties and mistakes, kept the score within five points throughout the match. As time ran out Breckendidge was controlling play deep in the Mucker end of the pitch with the score only 11-9 against them. The Muckers were able to cling to the long end of the narrow score with some fine defense when it counted most. Breckenridge, who had no trouble scoring trys against other tour-namant tour-namant opponents, never crossed Park City's try line. . The Boulder game offered a contrast in fine and miserable Park City rugby. After totally dominating their opponent through the first forty minutes, the Muckers handed Boulder two gift-wrapped gift-wrapped trys and dropped behind 12-7. With twenty minutes remaining, Boulder was not able to protect their five point advantage. Under tremendous j Mucker pressure near '. their own Mef JSM committed' a'costfy'penaRy, Park City spun the ball through Schirf, Thompson and out to Terry who found the gap for the try. Fly-half Schirf glanced the conversion kick off the left-hand upright and over the cross bar, giving Park City a 13-12 lead they would never relinquish. SEND LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Muckers soon drove near the Boulder line once again where Scrum-half Corky Foster scored his second try of the tournament with a drive around the scrum. Bob "Furry" Lewis put across a try in the corner to seal the victory for the Muckers as time ran out, the final tally reading Muckers 21, Boulder 12. Probably the most, significant development for the Muckers in this match was the fine performance at fullback turned in by John Sundquist. Sundquist played . brilliant rugby, showing a flair for the counter-attack rarely seen in a first year player. The Muckers' early Saturday loss to the Denver Barbarians reflected the confusion of too many people playing out of position. Injuries carried over from the Dead Goat game, and several no-goes, forced the Muckers into a massive-lineup massive-lineup shuffle. The Barbarians Bar-barians were too polished to not take advantage of Park City's scrambled effort in the early going, and thrashed them thoroughly, 29-9. . Once Foster moved to scrum-half and Sundquist became a force . at fullback, the backline combination of Schirf, Thompson, Terry and Kevin McKay went to work putting the pressure on their opponents. The lads brought home the fourth place cow-pie to show for the fine road effort. Park City hosts Idaho Falls ftugBy Club this Saturday at'3 p'm.' Wtdttib' Clulf edged the Muckers in a showdown in Twin Falls three weeks ago, 12-10. The visitors will feature a rough-and-toumble forward pack ans some strong and fast backs. The game is likely to be high scoring with good strong tackling setting up much of the action. 1MB TRAIN RIDE THE MINE TRAIN RIDE THE MINE TRAIN 2 o m Me the Mine Train Now making daily runs , to the underground museum 11 a.m. 1 p.m. 3p.m. TICKETS: $3 Adults, $2 children 12 and under, Kids under 5 ride free -; ;--.
