Show 88THE Wednesday, May 5, 1976 Page 7 Roland's :v"'. '''!, Ruradup' by Bill Roland ; Bold Forbes Captures Derby Victory Bold Forbes charged down the long stretch at Churchill Downs for a one-length wire-to-wire--victory in the 102nd running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday afternoon. Heavy favorite Honest Pleasure made a game move at the top of the stretch but could not over take Bold Forbes as the two colts headed for the wire. The race was marred when a smoke bomb was thrown on the race track near theeithth pole just after the field hd passed that point for the first time. J ' t However, Sgt. Gary Wall, in his first year with the National Guard flicked the bomb into his helmet, ran to the outside edge of the track and buried it. The smoke had almost cleared when the nine derby colts passed that point again. A crowd of 115,387 watched as jockey Angel Cordero, aboard Bold Forbes, obeyed his trainer's orders to the letter when he went to the front on the break and kept the lead by as many as five lengths after the first half mile. The Kentucky Derby victory was especially pleasing to Cordero who "beat one of the best horses and a great jockey and a man who is a great friend of mine." . - A somber and disappointed Baulio Baeza said Saturday after failing to guide odds on favorite Honest Pleasure to victory,"The little horse was just too game I couldn't catch him. Baeza, the country's top jockey in 1975 refused to blame his pre-race put down by trainer Lee Roy Jolley for his disappointing failure. "I rode the horse, he didn't. I followed his instructions. He told me to lay back in second or third during the early part of the race. I did just what he told me. But when I made my move turning into the stretch the little horse kept going. I thought I had a shot at catching him when we moved into the stretch but he was too much horse for us today.'-' The two thoroughbreds will probably meet again in the Preakness, the second jewel of racing's Triple crown, on May 15th. Ali Defends Title in Sluggish Fight In perhaps his worst showing ever, Muhammad Muham-mad Ali won a unanimous decision Friday night over game challenger Jimmy Young. Out of shape and ten to fifteen pounds overweight, Ali was awarded the decision partially on a tactical error by Young, as the challanger ducked out of the ring six times, once it cost him a round, the twelve, which he had been winning and in several other rounds it cost him points.' "They counted laying outside the ropes as a knock down," Ali said. "That hurt him, I don't think he would have done it if he realized that.' That was his mistake. I was terrible. I almost slipped up and lost the fight." Ali fought "the worst fight of my career" but gave plenty of credit to Young. Ali predicted Young would be the champion after Ali retires but he has said the same thing about Ken Norton, George Foreman, and others. He likes to soothe his victims. Norton will be Ali's next major challenger -probably in late September. Ali takes on England's Richard Dunn in Germany May 25 and tangles with a Japanese wrestler for $6 million later in the summer. , "I made. a mistake by contracting myself to fight too much this year," Ali said. "The training is getting so boring. I weigh 230 pounds, just what I . weigh when I'm in terrible shape. I'm 34 and I'm telling you what I did was a miracle, going 15 rounds and beating that young man. I've been eating too much pie, too much ice cream. You wouldn't believe the things I do in training." ' Many ringside observers thought Young won the fight. The Associated Press had it 69-66 in the challanger's favor. But even those who had Ali winning saw it a lot closer than the judges did. Referee Tom Kelly had it 72-65 on the five-points-a-round system in which the winner of the round gets five points and the loser four or less. Judge Larry Barrett scored it 70-68 and Judge Terry Moore had it 71-64 in Ali's favor. Young lost the tignt but earned mm self 175,000 and a ton of respect. H will be heard from in the future. Basketball Playoffs In the ABA, the finals are under way as the New York Nets defeated the Denver Nuggets 120-118 120-118 on Saturday. The second contest was played last night in Denver. Meanwhile in the NBA, the Boston Celtics defeated the Buffalo Braves and will begin a series with the Cleveland Cavaliers, beginning Wednesday evening. Elsewhere, defending champion Golden State has a 1-0 lead over the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference finals. Game 2 of that series is on tap tonight. Mtofc Nofo By Jay Meehan His hair was shorter than it had been two years ago in Salt Lake City and he was sporting a rather distinquished looking grey beard, making it a bit difficult to recognize the face; but the percussive authority of the drums and the way the band gravitated toward him during sound-check sound-check served to reveal his idenity. It was Waylon Jennings' long time road cronie and the only drummer the Waylors have ever had: Richie Albright a portrait of the artist as a side-man. After meeting Waylon in 1964, Richie began packing his drums from Prescott, where he played in a country group, to Phoenix where he would jam with the locally legendary Mr. Jen nings at "Frankies". Back then Waylon wasn't using a drummer a situation that quickly changed. Richie has been with him ever since, only now he packs those drums all over the country Richie remembers: "Waylon's whole approach ap-proach was unique. His guitar playing, back then he played a stratocaster, and of course, that voice." - ; It was in March of '65 when Waylon and Richie left Phoenix and A&M Records on that now historic trip east to Nashville and recorded 'Folk-Country " the first of his still growing list of RCA albums. While Waylon's influence at RCA has been somewhat less man that of Chet Atkins, he has been able to secure from the lable a sufficient amount of creative control. The patico" generated by friends involved in a labor of love. Waylon and Willie Nelson produced it and the title tune, "This Time", was to become as hard as this may be to believe, Waylon's first number one song. Richie always a fan of Jen-ning's Jen-ning's own compositions, kept insisting that "This Time" would make it. It was this in-sistance in-sistance that caused them to do one more take. "The" one as it turned out. Now they've found another studio and do they dig it. Jessi Colter, Waylon's wife and new star the scene, records and performs with the Waylors. Her most recent sessions were done at Sound Lab in Los Angeles, and the results totally knocked everyone out. , "On playback every instrument is like 3-D, with great separation. Best sound I've heard on Moon's steel in years," noted Rickie. The group's reaction to Jessi's sessions was positive enough that Waylon's next album is currently being cut at Sound Lab between road engagements. Waylon and Ken Mansfield are handling the production. Richie:"He and Waylon work real good together. Mansfield sets the mood and you know that's all Waylon needs. It was Ken's idea to do that Neal Young song. ("Are You Ready for the Country," a tune from Young's "Harvest" LP and a possible single off of Waylon's next one.) Sitting.
