The 250 striking workers left their jobs at Fark uiy s Ontario' mine on Friday, April 30, after unanimously voting to reject a 3 year contract offered by the Park City Ventures Mining Corp. ' 25 Cents Per Hour Ryan, who described his union "as one of the strongest in the nation," stated,"We will stay out just as goddamn long as we have to in order to get what our members need. We've been working for little long enough. We're not asking for the moon, we're just trying to get on our feet.", According to the union president, "right now we are 25 cents per hour away with the company, along with a ' conflict over the absentee policy and who will pay the new insurance increase." Commenting on the absentee ab-sentee clause that the union is requesting, Ryan said,"Its just a matter of trying to protect our members. We don't want military rule around here." Company's Statement In a statement presented to The Newspaper by Park City Ventures Corp official Rick Hurst, the company described the contract dispute as follows:. . "At . midnight,, April 30, picket lines went up in protest of our settlement proposal. Under the Company's offer the average employee would make $5.35 on a straight per hour time basis. This represents a $242 monthly increase, or a yearly increase of $2,9000, plus fringe benefits. The company's offer for the second and third years includes in-cludes additional across the board wage increases with a cost of living adjustment and additional fringe benefits. The company's offer represents an increase in excesses of 35 percent for the first year." Rebuttal When asked about the company's offer of a 35 percent increase for the first year, union vice-president Cliff" (Blacky) Sorenson said,"Thirty-five percent of nothing is still nothing." Sorenson added, "We are the lowest paid local in the entire United Steel Workers Union." Continued on page 3 Sewer Bond Election Scheduled The bond election for the Snyderville Basin Sewer District has been scheduled for June 8 from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. ; in the Memorial Building and a public meeting to discuss the bond issue will be held May 26 at 7 p.m. in either the high school or Marsac Elementary School. , These dates, times, and locations were selected at a joint meeting of the sewer district board and Park City Council held last Thursday night. The two groups were originally slated to meet on May 6 but postponement of a trip by city officials to Aspen and Vail, Colo., , made the earlier date possible. Clarification The council had requested the joint meeting for clarification of the board's decision several weeks ago to issue no additional letters of approval for sewer connections. con-nections. The action was interpreted to mean different things by different people. Board Chairman Mel Flinders said, "It was the intent of this board to demonstrate that it didn't feel it could continue to provide letters of agreement to developers for something it's not sure of." He said such action would be "presumptuous." "presump-tuous." Earlier statements by Flinders . concerning the possibility of a bond election failure caused widespread alarm among local developers. Park City Planning Commission Chairman Burnis Watts, who is also a ; board . member, said he viewed the board's decision to mean "no new hookups" except for subdivisions previously granted letters of approval.
