Snowfall Suspected As Trigger Of Gigantic Bird Kill One of the largest known bird kills in the history of Utah - the death of 4,000 to 5,000 grebes, gulls and ducks on Nov. 26 to 29 at the Great Salt Lake has been linked to a bacteria-caused infection. in-fection. But it is a severe snowstorm which is believed to have triggered the fatal outbreak of erysipelas. The cause of the mysterious bird kill was unknown until laboratory examination of specimen birds by Dr. Wayne I. Jensen at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Bear. River Research Station in Brigham City, Utah, uncovered sufficient suf-ficient quantities of the bacteria (Erysipeothrix rhusiopathiae) ' in the specimen birds to warrant the diagnosis. Earlier lab analysis by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources had not successfully pinpointed the cause of the death of the grebes, which accounted for 95 percent of the kill. However, the mysterious deaths still are not fully explained. Erysipelas is a disease which affects the bloodstream and is prevalent in pigs, sheep and turkeys. How the disease is , transmitted tran-smitted under natural con- Cleanliness Next To Godliness There's more evidence that cleanliness is next to godliness. "The Environment Monthly" reports that young athletes who seek God's favor in the traditional Epiphany "dive for the cross" at Patras, Greece, were for1 bidden this year by municipal officials. GflrdGllS On The Vn I nO increase For the first time since world War II and the Victory Garden era, more than half of all U.S. households will have some kind of vegetable1 garden this year, according to a recent Gallup poll. In 1974, 49 percent of all U.S. households or approximately 35 households comprising more than 100 million peopiet had vegetable gardens. That was a 10 percent increase over 1971. SUPPORT YOUR ditions is not exactly known, but it is suggested that it results from ingestion . or wound infection. In the Utah bird kill, the hypothesis of a "carrier" bird as the source of the organism seems most, probable. ';" Dr. Jensen couples this hypothesis with an additional one that the heavy snowstorm of Nov. 29 may have lowered the resistance of other birds, triggering the outbreak. He explains that grebes are weak fliers compard to other ' waterfowl. During the storm, he suggests, the birds could have been stressed to the point of being susceptible to the infection. The fact that the birds were in the process of migration adds to the credibility of Jensen's hypothesis. In follow-up to this ;in- vestigation, bird carcasses will be collected periodically on the shores of the Great Salt Lake, as long as they are recognizable. Soil samples will be taken after that time. These specimens should tell how long the bacteria will persist in the local environment. en-vironment.
