EDITOR: I was happy to learn that the Kennecott Copper Corporation Cor-poration has been awarded the distinquished Pollutzer Prize for its enormous contribution con-tribution to the air we breath. Although Kennecott has long been recognized as the area's leader in atmospheric alterations, A was not until Thursday, when the company displayed such a magnanimous degree of civic pride along with an unmatched sensitivity for community health, did it pull away from its stiff competition com-petition and prove that it alone deserved the coveted Pollutzer Prize. For those ungrateful citizens who have been unaware of Kennecott's heroic gesture, which quite possibly saved thousands of lives.let it be known that the large conglomerate shut down their Magna copper smelter due to a record breaking sulfur dioxide buildup and thus averted a crisis by minutes. Despite the fact that the ambient air standard, or the must-not-exceed level oi concentration fit for living creatures, states that air content must not go beyone t part per million of sulfure dioxide on a 24-hour basis,, the couragous company, on its own initiative, shut down the smelting operation when the monitor system recorded a meager .78 ppm. Reports that Kennecott officials were forced too :' shut down operation because their' entire crew had been asphyxiated were termed by ; a company spokesman as being "full of hot dirty air.? Special condemnation is in order for the process control and environmental engineers ' who said the new monitoring system functioned well and "allowed us to respond to the situation" long after we started to choke and our eyes started to burn. f A salute goes to these perceptive men and their proud company which, for as long as anyone can remember, has been providing a steady and very noticable contribution to the air we breath. t . ft.- On a less facetious note but not necessarily a more serious one, another award should be bestowed. This one, The Irony Coup d'etat Award, goes to the anti abortion demonstators who gathered at the Utah State Capital steps to chant "Life is Beautiful" while they choked on Salt Lake City's record-. breaking air pollution. It is not the intent here to question the perrogative of any lobbyist group, particularly par-ticularly the anti-abortion supporters, but rather to point out the inconsistencies of anyone who can claim to be pro-life and yet not take issue with the violation of life's most self sustaining element oxygen. Therefore, all people who breath air, whether you be Mormon or Catholic, rich or poor, killer or saint, born or unborn, speak out for your inalienable, God-giving, and self-evident rights to clean air. Sincerely, - JJS. ADVERTISING IN 55S BRINGS RESULTS!
