For the students in Jackie Hull's first-grade class at Grovecrest Elementary, the 100th day was a special day. "It's a celebration of being in school for 100 days." Hull said. "We're really excited it's the 100th day of school!" said Jaxon Williams. Nearly all of the day's learning and activities centered cen-tered on the number 100. The hundredth day of school was counted, tallied and noted on the classroom calendar. The class read a story and a poem, each consisting of exactly 100 words. For reading time, the students stu-dents read until the class had read 100 books. Each time a student completed reading a book, he or she was able to add a marker to a large chart of l - Stitch Reptetor t BERNIrW ! Z 210 - .! " CkSnofiyiM - 1 t books read. Every student wrote a short story on what he would do with KX) of anything candies, can-dies, toys or even leopards and all the stories were compiled into a class book, "If Iliad 100 Smiles." Hundred day math activities included counting and writing number sentences of things that equaled 100. Counting to 100 or having 100 of something is a big thing when you're 6 years old. "It's really big and it's one of our favorite numbers," said Rylinne Edwards. One of the day's challenges involved counting and graphing, graph-ing, by color, 100 M&M candies. can-dies. The students worked together to-gether in small groups, helping and encouraging one another. And after all the students of each group had completed their graph, they were allowed to share and eat their candies. The 100th Day of School celebration ended with a big snack. Each student brought in 100 small treats. The goodies, including candy, crackers and popcorn, were mixed in a large bowl to be shared at the close of the day. Williams was excited at the prospect of seeing many hundreds hun-dreds of snacks in the large bowL "We had 19 kids each bring in 100 snacks so we'll have 1,900 snacks!" he said. The colorful, exciting 100th Day of School celebration was a perfect opportunity to celebrate cele-brate learning and to bring excitement ex-citement and fun into a dreary and bleary January day.
