B. Gibson .. Jock S. Poc .. Korl Bonki HIGHER TAXES, NO CURE-ALL The old method of solving problems by raising taxes continues con-tinues to have ardent exponents in the Beehive State. Members of the Utah Committee on Children and Youth in conference assembled In Salt Lake City recently, endorsed a proposal to "raise the Utah tax on cigarettes as much as possible." The reason given was that the higher price would discourage teenoge smoking. We suppose that it would be "possible" for the upcoming Utah legislature to raise the tax on cigarettes as much as they see fit. But any increase that was hefty would certainly backfire, unless the legislatures of the surrounding states did likewise. During years past, some states have tried the same thing with taxes on liquor. They didn't raise more tax revenue only a bumper crop of bootleggers. There are enough ways now for odults to profit by the delinquency of juveniles. Why odd cigarette bootlegging to the long list? If we are really serious about shielding Utah boys and girls from the cigarette habit, we might start by making it illegal to advertise the glories of smoking in newspapers and on public billboards. At least we could go that far in Utan, if we want to, that is. Also, we might point out that the continual raise in taxes on gasoline has not decreased the and drive cars. 24 YEARS AGO In tho Review From the Files of the Review Friday, December t, 1938 Journalism student from PO High school will attend writ-era writ-era wrkahop at BTU tomorrow. . 24 Teara Ago The cast of the Second Ward MIA play include Blaine Swen-son, Swen-son, Nona Bullock, Harold Peay, Roe Hillman, Ida Halliday, Glen Robertson, Golden Peay, Josephine Joseph-ine Smith, and Reed Smith. 24 Tears Ago ( Mayor and Mrs. S.
