Why do we celebrate Christmas? What is there about this day that should appeal to us? Does it appeal to us a day of feasting or merriment, or a day. for which we should have our mind on gift buying? Or do we dwell upon the fact that it is Christ's birthday, and what His advent has meant to the world. His life, teaching; teach-ing; the principles which he advocated advoca-ted if lived up to today,' would bring peace into the home, and joy and gratitude to the heart of man. In order to have ths Euirit of Christmas, it Is not new sury to have costly gifts or sumptlous repasts. A simple gift, a frugal meal, and a heart full of love, gratitude and sym pathy, and tbeTndwelling thought of what He has done for mankind will fill the' heart with gladness. Then Christmas being Christ's day. The Thoughts should this day of all times be turned toward Him who Is the Son of God. the Savior of mankind. We should never weary of telling the story of His birth. His life should form the theme of our conversation. He was sent as a Christmas gift to all mankind. He gave his life, that men might live. The story of this Is the most sublime and wonderful story in all literature. The mistake Is often made, perhaps, per-haps, unconciously, that we direct our thoughts to Santa Claus, rather than to Him whose birthday it Is. To give gifts is in accord with His ex ample, and the greatest Joy in ob serving the day, is In giving rather than receiving. It should be fore' most in our minds, what can I do for others? rather than, wiiat will San tt Claus bring me Henry Drummond says: "Jesus had no money he wrote no book had no army organized no institu tionyet he conquered .the world The annual celebration of his birthday all over the civilized world for nearly two thousand years Is an enduring proof of the marvelpusness of his Conquest o Varying Appetites Government economists estimate that It takes two acres of crops to feed the average American, one acre of land for the average German, half an acre .for the average Chinese, and only one-fourth of an acre for the average' Japanese.
