Show n : -:-' - . "' a' Univ of Utah m VOLUME .14 NUMBER 9. The Liquor Question. Mr. Editor: There eeems to be quite a difference dif-ference of opinion among our citizens as to the advisability of iiaving saloons in our beautiful little village, surrounded as it is by these pretty hills, mountains - and streams. I am persuaded to belive that it is becoming of my profession to say something of the moral eide of the question, that is so full of importance and consequences conse-quences to us all. i The liquor business, I fully recoguize the fact , that constitutional constitu-tional law has made liquor-selling and drunkard-making a legitimate le-gitimate money making business. busi-ness. I may add that it is a dirty, mem, immoral and dishonorable dis-honorable business. Thfaame'' government that is made liquor-selling a legiti- i2rkte business in this country, Las a standing army of 25,000 men, and so far as .we have 1 learned, they killed nobody last year. But in our peaceful towns and villages, on our quiet farms and in the cities that'are recognized recog-nized as the centers ofour great philanthropies, there was slaughtered, slaugh-tered, last year, 17,142 persons, of whom 10,650 persous were murdered and the rest committed commit-ted suicide. For the last twenty years, murders, divorces and liquor sales have increased nine times as fast as the population Lynchiugs, labor riots, social impurity and municipal corruptions corrup-tions have increased to a greater great-er extent than in any other country. Ninety per cent of the crime committed in this country bas its origin in strong drink. Side by side with this statement state-ment put another. The alcoholic alco-holic lunatics have risen from average of 2li per 'cent in the year 1876 S3 to 36 per cent in in 1902. I. am convinced that no bodi-1' bodi-1' diseases, no family ruin, no &ooiul i)ttitroph is so bad as thef destruetion of mind. Mental Men-tal disease ist a bodily disease. It results just as directly from physical disorders of the brain as indigestion from a weak stom-ache. stom-ache. Of course mental and moral causes may depress and disturb the physical action of the brain. But every man in whom excessive drinking causes insanity there are fifteen in whom it injures the brain, blunts the moral sense and lessens les-sens the capacity for work in lesser degree. The brain's mental men-tal functions suffer first, and suffer suf-fer most from alcohol. The man who becomes addicted to alcohol, which man is prone to, it soon finishes him of his usefulness, use-fulness, so that he becomes a criminal, a loafer or a lunatic. Henceforth he is a burden and a curse to the community. What shall we say of a business busi-ness which causes all this destruction de-struction of humanity and which amounts annually to the euor-mous euor-mous sum of 1,200,000,000 and extends its branches in all directions direc-tions like the arms of Victor Hugo's Argus-eyed Devilfish, reaching every nook and corner of the laudl Must we not meet it with forces correspondingly various and mighty iu their op-plicaiion? op-plicaiion? Moral persuasion is good in its place but it would be sinply powerless as a force to roll back Niagria. Intemper-ence Intemper-ence is powerful with a class of citizens, but with another class it is of little value. The liquor selling in this village is deplorable deplo-rable to tay the least. A thoughtful instil often feels that a saloon would be better than the present conditions, but, then there comes this consideration across the mind. For the citi izens to stand shoulder to shoulder shoul-der with the officers in enforc- ing the lawr, then, and not till then will our City ordinances be respected and obeyed. May the temperenee people of this community stand together on this important question and prepare for the battle at an early ear-ly date. A mighty weapon is befcWyou, use it with God-given strength. I am vonrsin earnest; L. B. Johnston, Pastor, Episcopal Church. A Weekly Newspaper, Devoted to the Interests of trie Leading Agricultural and HortioulturaJ City Council Deliberations. The child wa in great agony and his mother could do nothing to pacify him. Remembering that she had a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain Balm in in the house, she thought she would try It. Jot a Sick Day Since "I was taken "severely sick with kidney troulJe, I tried all sorts of medicines, none of which relieved me. One day I saw an ad. of your Electric Hitters and determined to try that. After taking a few doses I felt relieved, re-lieved, and soon thereafter was entirely en-tirely cured, and have not been sick a day since. Neighbors of mine have been cured of rheumatism, neuralgia, liver and kidney troubles and general debility." This is what B F. Bass, of Fremont. N. C, writes. Only 50c. at the Springville Drug Co. Care of the Body. The following from George's Weekly, Denver, and over the signiture of Eleauor Clark, is well worthy of careful perusal and deep study. "Your body is beautiful, never mind how it appears to you. Wrinkles and flabbines may confront you in the mirror, but what of that? This unaesthetic appearance is entirely of your own making, and what you have made can be eraced or unmade. It may take some time; but again what of that? It took you a good many years, perhaps, to plant those evidences of ugliness. You have scowled and contorted con-torted all your facial muscles and in the mean time have constantly con-stantly yielded to the foolish fool-ish race thought of decay and death. So, betweenyour growling growl-ing and your giving up you have made a pretty mess of it. A great deal more than this you have done. You may have been very unwise and very intemperate in-temperate in your diet. You have eaten when you were not hungry, when you were weary, when you felt weak or had pain. You have disobeyed every rule of healthful living, and yet you are surprised at the change in your countenance. Beauty is a very tender point with me. I have always hated to see the changes that were wrought from year to year in the faces of my friends, and in my own case, the pai i was most poignant. That such alterations were necessary or decreed by Divine Providence I never believed, and still I did not fully enough disbelieve these errors to escape the gravi-U gravi-U ting attraction that pulls!own every hild of earth who con SPRINGVILLE, UTAH, THJJ3SDAY, NOV. 12, 1903 sents to the devastating process-. Dr. Hardicraft, otherwise known as Geoge Dash? wood, is a character which runs the gamut of human sentiment. He would have been a good man but for an overweaning ambition. ambi-tion. It was this that led him to break the law. His love for his wife wins for him great sympathy, sym-pathy, while on the other hand his dual life would impose censure. cen-sure. A character which starts forth in the play with great force is that of Laura Duchesne an adventuress. It is a part of surpassing emotional qualities, yet thoroughly artistic and in no way overdrawn. Of course virtue . triumphs in the end, but the struggle which is so vividly depicted" in this splendid play cannot fail to hold the attention of an audience. There is that in the play which appeals to the heart, for in it ore mingled'laiighter anil tears, pathos, dramatic intensity and tradgedy.
