"Oh! that men slmuM put an enemy into their mouths, to steal away their brain;-!" Shak. From the days of Noahjup to the present hour, every reader of his'ory, f nered or secular, is familiar with the numerous instances in-stances of the direful-results of indulging in strong drink, in every land and in every clime, whether - in savage trihe or so called civiiiz3 1 nation j. It is not, however, my purpose to write a hoiuily on this subject; hat to express my opinion of conditions here in Springville. I quote from the Independent of the 8h instant: "Dare Mr. Hall eay, that wiiij at least lour places pla-ces selling liquor in violation of the ordinances, sthat prohibition is not nn empty nam? When 'V.W. i sJ,''-m VlhJV ifien and full supjtort of all citizens in the enforcenveut of the law irresjrect-ive irresjrect-ive of party lines or party affiliations; affilia-tions; aud believing it a moral wrong to license an evil under any conditions. Therefore, we declare ourselves our-selves emphatically opposed to the open saloon, sale of intoxicants intoxi-cants as ti beverage, and pledge ourselves by aud with the support sup-port of the people to use all legal Republican Primary. The Republicans of the City met at the City Hall last Saturday Satur-day evening for the purpose of naming a muncipial ticket to be voted for next November 3d. There are a better representation of party slrengh present than ever before gathered at a Republican Repub-lican primary iu this City, aud though there were some lively means to suppress the illicit j scrappy scenes, disorder and boys can 4be seen on our streets in all stages of intoxication." This assertion by Judge E. N. Jordan discloses a deplorable state of affairs calculated in my judgement to make sneaks and cowards of. those who were destined des-tined to be men, a class of creatures crea-tures that there i3 no use for in heaven, on eatlh or the other place. Therefore, I am in favor of either one thing or the other. Of the two evils I would rather see an erring mortal walk in at (he front door like a man, than sneak around to the back door like a .then if he considers it to be his "inalienable right" to get lrunk let the law teach him the lesson if he is capable of learn ing anything that "the way of the transgresser i? hard." I have no de&ire to blame the Hon. James E. Hall, for I believe that in his experience as mar . hal, lie has found, that under present conditions it is easier to deplore than it is to remedy the evils. Geo.
