Show A Weekly Newspaper, Devoted to the .Interests of the Leading Agricultural and Horticultural Section of Utah "The Garden of the West" VOLUME .13 NUMBER 42, SPRING VILLE, UTAH, THUJiSjUY,, JULY 2, 1903 PRICE, $1.25 PER ANNUM. i I ) A Sad Accident On Monday last, Athos John-eon John-eon met with a serious and painful accident. The Spring-ville Spring-ville Rifle Club were at target practice, and Athos was tending target. I was his dutytn stand behind the target, which is bullet bul-let proof; and when a sliot was fired, bin 1 up the hole made by the ball, and signal the number to the shooting .stand, then retire re-tire behind the breastwork until un-til the next shot. Dr. Fred Dunn had fired in his turn, and Athos had filled the hole aud again retreated behind be-hind the target. W. C. Cooper then took aim and fired, an 1 a he lowered liis gun, he and others saw the boy fall. As the men : ran to his assistance he got up and fell twice. The wound was from a 32 cal. bullet, and upon J rjinatioiv was founu to iiave entered in the right temple, glancing along the skull, shattering shat-tering the bone at the corner of the eye, and completely destroyed des-troyed that organ. Athos' account is as follows "I marked out Dr. Dunn's shot, and went behind the target, when I rememberei I hadn't got the number. I ran out quick, when a bullet struck me, aud I felt like I was soariug away, aud I thought it was all up with me. I thought of mamma all the time, and wondered why . I couldn't touch the ground. , Pretty soon I fell, and then the men picked me up, and handled me carefully and brought me home." It appears that just as Mr. Cooner had his sight on the , u "bull's eye," the boy came with vm laus, rorld JimkT;'. uq re- so quickly that he could .not be seen, and came in line just in time to be struck. - On Tuesday morning Doctors. Smart, Dunn, and Taylor assisted by Drs. Packard and Kelly, performed the very difficult diffi-cult and delicate operation of removing re-moving the debris from the eye-socket, eye-socket, stitching ' up the torn fragments and dressing the wound. No internal iupture was found leading to the brain; and it would seem', after the splendid operation, that the boy's recovery recov-ery is assured, without any particular par-ticular datrger of complications appearing. There seems to be no particular particu-lar blame to be attached to any person, for the deplorable acci dent. It was one of those in scrutable, ui) foreseen, unaccount able happenings, oocuring once iua million times, ami where least expected. The Rifle Club, should have, perhaps, secured the services of an older and moie experienced person to tend their target. Athos is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Mose Johnson, in his twelfth year. He displayed good courace. sense. ami nerve o throughout the preliminary dres sing and the operation. Sociability and Profit. The Strawberry Festival, given upon the green in the City Hall. Park, recently, called up a train of reflection, pointing to the good that might be accomplished accom-plished in our City, in a social aud beneficial way, by extending extend-ing the idea suggested by the and sociales -which have been inaugurated. We believe, when a supper is given, by the.L. D. When the Sec ond Ward desires to purchase a carpet for their new church, and a supper is prepared, in the. beau tiful structure, or elsewhere, for the purpose of raising fuuds, all classes ought , to attend the love! feast, where full value will be given in a good meal and double value .given .in the social com-ingling com-ingling of lhe towns people, of of all classes. .Also when -any. .of the . christian -societies .of .the City, prepare a .festival for-souie worthy, purpose, turn out, take the wives and give them, a feast, not f their own preparingget them out ' of their own environ inenl for an hour or two, and it will give them new courage to take the "burdens of life again" it lhe old laud. It never occured to him that it should be located near the point, and he might have failed altogether had it not been for a remarkable remark-able dream. One night he dreamed that he was making a sewing machine ma-chine for a savage king in a strange country."
