In many dislricts in our State the schools have had lo be cles-ed cles-ed because of the lack of funds tu pay the teachers. ; Salt Lake , City was agitated as seldom before, when the woid went forlh that the City schools would, per force, be closed on May 1st, for this year for the lack of t lie "sinews of war." The Public schools are one of the bulwarks of the Republic, and one of the greatest blessings of the age, and everything in reason should .tie uoue io Keep them open the entire school year, not only, in the cities, but in the country districts'; In the cities they have . the '""maximum" of weaitlifttid the minimum of children, and in the rural districts dis-tricts is where the children need the full school year. After that Archimedian lever, the press of Salt Lake, got well under the foundations of society, $12,000 was raise to keep the schools open, by popular subscription. sub-scription. By this plan all the children, rich aud poor alike, can complete the year- The question naturally arises, and is asked by many, are we not spending too much money for the public schools? The ninth grade has been added to the original system, in the cities. and the last Legislature made it mandatory upon the school boards to furnish text books. This means about two mills addi- tonal tax, aud there are no "ifs" nor "huts" about it, the order is imperitive. and must he complied com-plied with. The voter?, locally, consented to u 7 mill lux this year to build the new school house, and (he Board has added 2 mills to. the special tax for the book fund. The schools ouht to be keit open the full school year, in jus-lice jus-lice to the teachers as well as the pupils. If we desire c- in netent tetchtrs. thev must be i:isir-l a .fill Ly ear 'urk.-. The Public' "school system is yet fur from periVt t, but it w ill grow in u.erit us lime cures the weakness. In th mean time, let us all make the be.il of it, in the hope, that the present army of boys and girls now benig "rocked in the Cradle of Liber-ty" Liber-ty" will in a later day arise and call us blessed. lasting ledger. We have known ministers of the gospel lo teach that the payment of church dues tithes, giving alms, etc, was laying lay-ing the treasure where it would pay an eternal increase in the world to come. We have heard these same men bitterly oppose members of their flock joining fraternal societies, and have turned the "cold shoulder" to such members as have united with some fraternal order for the purpose of securing a few thousand dollars insurance as protection in case ofsickness, accident or death. We consider ihut all church members ought to render unto their churches all that is due, byway by-way of;, tithes, ullei ings, alien- dance at meetings, " etcr-w'hicli may be counted as treasure in the "Lords StorH House," but while doing all this, also carry some insurance for jnobab.e earthly needs, and thereby just as surely lay up treasures in heaven as when paying some religious obligation. There are many men who cannot store treasures on earth, beeause of the many demands upon them, ami the only pro- vission they can make to insure those dependent upon jihem, against want and suffering, in cate of disaster, is by paying a small amount each monilr into some beneficial order. The man who makes this wise provision, is laying up treasures on earth as well as in heaven. A few thousands in a good fraternal order is a wise and safe investment. Put some of your treasure in the Fraternal strong, box, where moth nor rust will not corrupt nor thieves break in an J s'etl. It is all right to "trust in God" but place some relintice in your own efforts eff-orts and "don't lapire!" Blame Parents. Too Great a Risk In almost every neighhoo.l someone some-one has died from an attack of colic or cholera morbus, often' before medicine med-icine txntli be prOvtiTed ur a physician summoned. A reliable remedy for these diseases should be kept at band. The risk is too great for any one to take. Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea remedy has undoubtedly saved the lives of more people and relieved more pain and suffering than any other medicine in use. It can always be depended upon For sale by the Spring - i I It; Drug Co. ! A writer in the Salt Lake Tribune Trib-une of April 20 makes some pertinent per-tinent remarks in relation to the hoodlumism that is rampant in Salt Lake City, and as the same conditions prevail here to quite an extent the article is quoted in full, hoping that parents, par-ents, will give the article careful care-ful consideration: Editor Tribune: I saw a notice no-tice in yesterday's Tribune that a saloonkeeper was arrested for allowing nine minors to play pool in his place. I think this report is very incomplete. The public is entitled to know more about if. While the saloonkeep er is only the passive party, the active offenders are not punished. punish-ed. Your readers not only want to know the names of those nine young men, but also the names of their parent?; "They want to know the names of these illbreds for the sake of preventing their children from associating with them. They want to kuow the parents' names, to avoid their company; their immoral influ ence might infect any tamily. Salt Lake has too many of those parents who are either too igno-raut igno-raut or too indifferent and immoral im-moral to raise and train children aud train them in accordance with all their religious doctrines and to the requirements of useful use-ful citizens. When their children child-ren are grown they simply turn them over - to the police rule. They themselves don't tke care of them. They have influence in the Legislature and City Council, Coun-cil, and are securing laws for the "guidance and protection of their ill bred boys. What they ought to .do themselves, they turn over to the State and city officers. The most redicu-h.us redicu-h.us laws are enforced just on account of these lawbreakers; the masses have to suffer on account of a fev. In this case I lie saloon sa-loon keeper is expected to judge iim to enter. ' This man ha3 to pay $1200 licence every year, the prize,' an elegant, gilt pitcher to the contestants jointly. The drama, without giving individual criticism, It may be said in very truth" that it was done excellently well, showing show-ing careful stud', good training and a fine execution throughout.
