Apropos to llie question of bonding the city for the purpose of establishing electric lights and possibly water works, many people peo-ple seem to be laboring under the misapprehension that it will iucrease taxation, and therefore heap additional burdens upon the people. This is aa inc irrect view to take uf the matter, for the truth is, a light plant will not increase taxation, but on the contrary, will in time, pay for itself, and ultimately afford revenue. reve-nue. Larger cities, that have taken the water and light pro positions are furnishing their inhabitants those necessities cheaper than they were ever before procurable, ami, are paying pay-ing most of the expenses of the city governments from the net profits, thereby relieving the citizens from direct taxation. Now what valid objection can be raised against our city under-taking under-taking to furnish the people with more and better water, protection pro-tection against fire, and a health-full, health-full, pleasant, cheap light, and make money, so that in a few years, after these utilities have paid for themselves, afford sufficient suffi-cient revenue for all municipal pur poses, ami relieve us, partly at least, from direct taxation? Private companies have stood ready for years to get an electric light franchise. What for? To make money ot course. It a private company was to secure a franchise, they would-coutinue to charge, for light all they could get, regardless of the peoples' rights; but after the city had paid for the plant, it would put the charges down to a mini mum, giving the users the bene fit. Let us consider the follow- ing figures: The Hobble Creek power plant can be put in, and all the necessary nec-essary wires, poles, etc. stiung for 2000 lights for $20,0001 Two electricians would cott $1,800 per annum; the interest on the - fcbove AtjG-AiexeiHi 1 -00: lien -- say, for coutiugen $500; making a total ol $3,500 American Serai Mr. C. E. Dallin,"Our Sculptor Boy," has an able article in the "Boston Evening Transcript" of Dec 20. '02. The paper is a thougntful, hopeful and interes ting consideration of the subject. Mi. Dallin, being a plastic artist art-ist himself, of much ability, is fully cunpetent to speak upon the su'jnct, yet without bia3, for his point of view is that of a fair minded public spirited man. What he has to say in regard to the statues and monuments that adorns our cities and towns 13 eminently sensible. Not only should they be memorials to. the brave and gooo!, but they should beautify and ornament their environ ments, inspiring in the breasts of all beholders a love for the artistic and beautiful. The stream, a mile or two distant, where the rite of baptism was performed, was easily translated into ) the sacred Jordan. The fear of bears gave zest to the story of Elisha and the raiHng children. Croup The pecular cough which indicates croup, is lusually well known to the mothers of croupy children. No time should be lost in the treatment of it, and for this purpose no medicine has received more universal approval than Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. Do not waste your valuable time in experimenting with untried remedies no matter bow highly they may be recommended, bnt give thin medicine as directed and ail symptoms of croup will quickly disappear.
