PRICE, $K25 PER ANNUM, NGY 1NBK The Ever Glorious Fourth Was observed in a sliring energetic en-ergetic way with but little that was ubjt ctionable to the order loving. Long before the amorous amor-ous God of day had kissed the slumbering lips of morning upon up-on the hill tops, bidding the Nationl day awake! the roar of dpt. Harrington's Artillery awakened the slumbering echoes in the hills, and the young American Am-erican with his lesser engines of disturbance soon had the drow sy City awakened. A generous display of bunting was soon coquetting with the breezes and binds of music, cordant, and dis cordaut, were playing in the streets. - At 9:30, the signal gun called ; tlib asSmbJy; atid at 10 : o'clock-the o'clock-the MeetingHoiiso was packed witli a patriotic throng. In" a brief speech Thos. Dalliu Esq. refered to the glorious day and introduced the master of ceremonies, cere-monies, M. E. Crandall jr. The - Overture by the Maccabee Baud consisted of a medley, in which our patriotic airs were blended. The Invocation, full of patriotic patri-otic spirit and fervor was delivered deliv-ered by Rev. R.C. Bailey. Choirister Roylance and choir sang the anthem Independence Day. Miss Jonena Peterson read in in a very eloquent style and good voice the Declaration. D. C. Johnson responded to the sentiment, Our New Possess ions, in a brief speech, the pos sessions being represented by; Cuba-Miss Louia Whittaker, lressed in blue, Porto Rico, by Miss Ellice Reynolds, arrayed in cream. Hawaii, by Miss Ida Maycock robed in white, Philip pines, by Miss Mable Wart hen, draped in red, all under the leadership of Miss Elfie Hunt ingtoii representing Columbia, with robes of State and crown of Stars; making a regal group of beauties, all taking their parts most creditably. E ich arose and addressed Columbia as follows: fol-lows: Cuba Columbia to thee, our pray- rs anl Tears, Were not poured out In vain; Yuu heard our wail for freedom's free-dom's hand, Your ships a gallant train. Fast o'er the sea to our rescue came. In spite of deep sea's sullen roar, "In spite of false lights on the shore." We've faith in thee, we've faith in thee. Hawaii Columbia I am thy foster child, 1 love to obey thy precepts mild. Oh glorious country of the Free! From our sea girt isle, we htok to thee For happiness, and full soverignty, Your flag waves o'er us, in the sea, Our Flag is yours, Flag of the Free! Fhilipines Ry the blood of Columbia's Colum-bia's sons, On our sea girt bosom shed! In the afternoon the rain interfered in-terfered with the elaborate program pro-gram that had been prepared. The parade was marshaled and made a short march, and the assembled hundreds were on the tip-toe of expectency for the "Wild West," when the of the upper deep broke loose and poured upon the good natured crowd, whilf the baud played in their sheltered canopy, the darkies dar-kies ami clowns played, sung and danced. The possession of an Angora cat has become a fad, particularly In fashionable fashion-able circles, and you will not wonder vhen you have made the acquaintance f one of these beautiful, .affectionate ireatures. When displeased the tail is swayed from side to side in a manner the meaning of which cannot be mistaken. The eyes are large, play ful and full of expression. The anl -maU are beautifully formed and are considerably larger than the ordinary cat. They are wonderful jumpers. very inquisitive and want to under stand everything that is going on. They are affectionate and loving, very graceful, grace-ful, and have most charming manners and dispositions, unusual intelligence and, as naturally follows, great dignity and vanity, says a writer in PUgrim. Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy, which I used according to directions and with entirely satisfac tory results. The trouble was con trolled much quicker than former attacks when I used other remedies Mr. Kelly is a well known citizen of Henderson, N. C. For sale by Spring ville Drug Co. The Boss Worm Medicine. Nw Theory of Viet. A new plan for retaining the charm of youth has been evolved. It requires continual dieting, but one so easily followed that few of the Inconveni ences of most systems are present, at uncooked apples constantly, although, of course, in moderation, and drink distilled water only, and, according to the new theory, years will be added to your life, while the evidences of age will be long in coming. Prof. Bluefern is the sponsor of the new theory, and his argument is bas ed on the supposition that as age advances ad-vances the deposits of mineral matter in the system increase, and that aging is little more than a gradual process of ossification. Phosphoric acid contains the least amount of earth salts, and for that reason is probably the nearest ap proach to the elixir of life known to the scientific world. I you want to live long, to retain your youth at the same time, and to Increase your brain tissue, eat plenty of apples, don't peel them, drink only distilled water, and eat as little bread as possible. A diluted solution of phosphoric acid is also recommended by the professor to those who care to take pains to follow the diet outlined. Bacred Cora of tbe Abenaki Indian Now of Ciudib An extraordinary ear of corn haa been found that is not an agricultural freak, but a bona fide cultivated product prod-uct of the soil. The most wonderful feature about the corn is that each rain is tightly encased in a separate husk, consisting of four and five layers. lay-ers. It is an ear of sacred or magical coin, belonging to the Abenaki Indian tribe; formerly of northern Maine, but now occupying the island of St. Francis, Fran-cis, Canada. The corn is considered to possess magical properties, which are demonstrated satisfactorily to the In dian mind by the fact that each grain jLs securely hidden and coTered from sight. The corn i$ incased in the usual usu-al shuck. ' At the annual tribal gathering of the Abenaki nation a grain of the sacred corn is given to each member. This is fastened in a belt of buckskin and worn as a talisman. The cultivation of sacred. corn by other tribes, who have striven in vain to obtain seeds for planting, is jealously guarded and prohibited. Women as Well as Men Are Made Miserable by Kidney Trouble. Joseph Stadelman of the Jesuit foundation of St. Francis Xavier, in I West Sixteenth street, devotes himself to work among the blind and the deaf and dumb, says the New York Times. He says that, contrary to the general impression, the blind are peculiarly happy and fond of jokes. . Illustrative of this, not long since a blind acquaintance of his, whose remaining re-maining senses, like that of all blind, are exceptionally keen, was in a room where there were some lady visitors. Finally one of the ladies left. "What remarkably white and perfect teeth that lady has!" laughingly remarked re-marked the blind man. "Why, how do you know?" .asked Fr. Stadelman. "Because for the last half h.our,6he has done nothing but laugh." Kidney trouble preys upon the mind, discourages dis-courages and lessens ambition; beauty, vigor and cheerfulness soon disappear when the kidneys kid-neys are out of order or diseased. Kidney trouble has become so prevalent that it is not uncommon for a child to be born afflicted with weak kidneys. kid-neys. If the child urinates urin-ates too often, if the urine scalds the flesh or if, when the child reaches an age when it should be able to control the passage, it is yet afflicted with bed-wetting, depend upon it. the cause of the difficulty is kidney trouble, and the first step should be towards the treatment of these important organs. This unpleasant trouble is due to a diseased condition of the kidneys and bladder and not to a habit as most people suppose. - Women as well as men are made miserable mis-erable with kidney and bladder trouble, and both need the same great remedy.
