Very truly yours, ' Wm. F. Gibson. - ii ta WITH THE SAQES. Th greatest results In life are usually usu-ally attained by simple means, and the exercise of ordinary qualities. The common life of every day, with Its cares, necessities and duties, accords ample opportunity for acquiring experience ex-perience of the best kind; and its most beaten pattie provide the true worker with abundant scope for effort and room for self-Improvement. Faastoo Bewildered I a Babel Chief tele. Satisfied with His Present Lot sod WUkH for the Cad ( the War. Henry Steele Morrison, a Chleage boy. on a tour around the world, was accorded tue privilege of an interview with Agulnaldo, the Filipino ehelftaln, In captivity In Manila. He sends the following account of the meeting: The interpreter asked me what pan of America I was from, and so our conversation bean. I seised the opportunity op-portunity to ask him whether he had any Intention of coming here. "Oh. no, Indeed, I have no Intention of leaving leav-ing the Philippines at all," was the reply, re-ply, "and anyhow," he continued, "I am no longer in a position to decide what my future movements will be. You find me very comfortably situated here in Malacanan, but I am nevertheless neverthe-less a prisoner of war, and prisoners always go where they are sent "I have no complaint to make of the treatment I have received at the hands of my captors. Oenesal MacArthur and General Chaffee have both been very considerate, and 1 have always been ready to compliment General Funs-ton." Funs-ton." "I suppose you are tired of talking about your capture at Palanan," I said. "It Is an old story now," said Agulnaldo, Aguln-aldo, "and I have ceased to bemoan my fate. It was a faith ef mine that I would never live to be made a prisoner, pris-oner, but on can never tell what may happen. In my wildest dreams I could not have coneelved that I would be taken in the way It came about Such a plan as General Funston's wofld never have occurred to me, and I stink he deserves great credit for carrying it out so successfully. "You can perhaps Imagine my surprise sur-prise when I discovered that the soldiers sol-diers whom I thought were my own were In reality American emissaries, and I wax so stunned when I realised this that It never entered my bead to HENRY 8TBELB MOBRISON. make any resistance. I hare heard and seen some remarkable things during dur-ing my career In the Philippines, tiut this achievement of General Funston's surpasses anything I ever knew." "1 have been told that many of the natives believed that you could never be captured." Agulnaldo sighed when this remark was repeated to him by the Interpreter. "Yea," be said, "it is true that they believe this. I have been told that very few of my followers will admit even now that I am In captivity, tt Is very sad that they should be disappointed disap-pointed In me, but 1 do not blame mr-self. mr-self. I took every precaution to prevent pre-vent my capture, and I have no fear that they will censure me for carelessness careless-ness when they know the true story of the affair. And I do not think my friends will desert me now that I am a prisoner; they should rather be more loyal than In the past, for now I cannot can-not help myself. You must not misunderstand mis-understand me. I do not mean to infer in-fer that I want to be helped. I am In the hands of the American military authorities and they can of course do with me as they vrtll. But I firmly believe be-lieve that when a settlement Is arrived at 1 will have Just as many friends as when this dreadful war began.".' I was surprised to hear Agulnaldo speak of his "faithful followers." In view of the facts. For every one In Manila knows that he has refused to drive In the street for fear that he may be shot, and that he wouldn't think of leaving Manila for the provinces, knowing only too well that his enemies would not rest until they had hit life. Agulnaldo was too vindictive while in power not to have enemies now that he Is a prisoner and has lost his remarkable remark-able Influence. Most of the natives have realized by this time that be Is In the hands of the Americans. , During our Interview I took occasion to ask Agulnaldo whether he had ever bvea In command of his troops In battle. bat-tle. He replied that he had not "I have seen very little fighting," he said, "for the reason that my friends always Insisted that my life was too valuable to be needlessly risked. It has seldom been possible for the Filipino troops to fight openly, anyhow, and I, with my cabinet, have usually kept away from the districts where fighting was going on. Very often we could remain In one village for months at a time without being disturbed, but at other times It was necessary for us to flee before the enemy. We could never be sure that we were safe." It was evident to me throughout the conversation that Agulnaldo has a good opinion of his capabilities and ac-eomolUiiiiUMiw, ac-eomolUiiiiUMiw, d 1 womtered wheth- "For atx year I was a victim ofdn-epela ofdn-epela In Its worst form. 1 could eat nothing but milk toast, and at times my stomach would not retain and digest even that Last March 1 began taking CASCARETS and since then I bare steadily Improved, until I am aa weU as I ever was in mj life." He can speak only a little English, but he can sometimes read the printed language fairly well, and, of course, his interpreter can always help him out. I was determined not to leave the room without obtaining some expression expres-sion from Agulnaldo regarding the death of President McKlnley. I said to him that America had lost a friend. His reply was very brief. "President McKlnley must have been an unusual man," he said, "and naturally he will be missed In America. Passengers on a Brooklyn bridgt trolley car were greatly amused the other day at the antics of their conductor, conduc-tor, who had been an old sailor and was going through some strange performances per-formances on the rear platform to show that he wasn't all landlubber yet, although he had been ringing up fares for several years. The rejuvenated sailor said: "I 'ad a fine old time, 'cul-lng 'cul-lng ropes when I 'ad a berth on the three-skysail-yardcr Stanhope, I takes on a 'alyard like this," he continued, grabbing the trolley rope and pulling until the motorman rang for power, liefore he was through with his exhibition ex-hibition of prowess the brake had been used aa a capstan, the rear seat as a forward deck and the fender as a long boat swung from its davits.
