A Denver preacher, according to the Republican, got after tbe divorce ej'il in good shape in a sermon I he o' her day. Our own state of Utah is made to pose a? a horrible example, and a truly ' formidable lot of statistics were J . - given iy Hie reverend gentleman. gentle-man. While there are others, Colorado and Utah, in the preacher's opinion, were the chief sinks of iniquity in so far as divorces are concerned. It is presumed the people of these two states also sin - in other respects, but the good mau did not mention it for which we, no doubt, ought to be thankful. He starts out with the following propltecy : "The divorce court, according to the staudards of Christ's teachings, is a disgrace to the United States, and as used in Colorado and Utnh, threatens the downfall of these states. It threatens the home and it is time that America awakens to her danger. Such has been the fate of other nations, and America Amer-ica will be no exception if she does not repent." When the applause from his fellow pastors had died away, the preacher produced his statistics: stat-istics: ' During the past ten years, iu every population of 10,000 there have been 442 divorces in the United States, as compared with 147 from corrupt France. And I regret to say that the proportion of the Protestant churches has been 123 as against 41 for the Roman Catholic church. According- to Retires by Bertillion, San 'Francisco alone shows 2.233 for each 100,000 in ten years, Colorado 152, Utah 170, and Rhode Island S9. London hows 40, Paris 250, ami Berlin 103. 'Colorado and Utah are heading the list of the nation's shame. "In the past 20 years, approx imately, there have been 328,- 316divorces granted, an average of about 16,130 pet annum. Who can piet-ire the pains that these divorces have caused? Th'nk of the shame of the children who have had this wormwood poured into their cups, cups of which they have been forced to drink. The pro portion of divorces to marriages in Colorado is one to five, and in Utah almost one to four. The number of people under 25 years of age who have sought divorces iu France in the last five years i3 1,511. There is a distinct relation between suicide and divorce, and although prac tically no figures are kept in this regard, 1 have discovered thot the proportion in one in stance is 250 suicides to 422 divorces. The causes in 67,686 cases of divorce were found to be 20 per cent adultery, all the other causes being 80 per cent. The causes for which a divorce may be granted in Colorado are eight in number: Adultery, desertion, de-sertion, cruelty, non-support, habitual drunkenness, felony, immoral or criminal conduct. Ungovernable temper is a legal cause for divorce in Kentucky, and gross neglect in Kansas and Ohio" It is estimated that the loss to Springville this season in crop failures due to scarcity of water will reach $50,000. This is probably a very conservative estimate. The only thirrg that can prevent this loss is a series of heavy rains, of which there is no sign at present. Let's see; how many btorage reservoirs would those $50,000 build? Judging from the trouble the Salt Lake Rescue Home is having hav-ing in its endeavor to secure a permaneut location, it would seem that there were those who didn't care whether the scarlet women were rescued or not. Alleged Christian women are acting like h 1 up there. BOARD OF E0LALIZATI0X. City Council Meets as Such, and Deals with the Assessment Itolls. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shepard have been visited with a sore affliction. During the past week they have lost two children, a boy and a girl, by scarlet fever. Andrew, the boy, who was a year and one-half old, was the first to die last Thursday and May, who was 8 years old, died Friday. The children took sick at Mr. Shepard's ranch on Crab crek in Spanish Fork canyon near Thistle, and both died there. The boy was brought down here and buried Friday night without ceremony, only the father and one or two others being present at the burial. The father then returned to bis rant 1:, ouly to And that the little girl had did during dur-ing his absence. Her remains were also brought here for burial, which took place Saturday morning without ceremony. Two more of the children were sick, so Mr. Shepard moved his family down from the ranch, and they are now under quarantine at his home here. At last accounts they were getting well. Mr. aud Mrs. Shepard's affliction is a severe one, and the sympathy sym-pathy of the community goes out to them. A Wonderful Cure. To the public in general: We take pleasure in adding our testimony of praise, with so many already before the ptblic, to the worth of John G. Coltriu's Salve. Our mother was sorely afflicted for several years with a very bad case of salt iheum. All endeavors seemed to be of no avail, until Coltrin's Salve was recommended recommend-ed to her. After a raithTul appli-cat'on appli-cat'on for about four weeks, she was entirely cured, and now feels in duty bound to recommend it to all who are thus afflicted. Harry Boshard J. R. BosnARD Mary Boshakd. Provo, Sept. 29, 1899. P. S. It is now 10 years since she was cured and has no sigu or trace of any return of the disease. (&"Sold at all stores.
