Show , tx m J M 11 Thursday, October 16, 2008 SPRING VILLE HERALD Co MMENTS Large and spacious building now? Editor and Springville residents: I would like to render my opinion on the proposed library. li-brary. I do not reside in Springville but rather in Mapleton. I am however, a Springville taxpayer. How is that?, you ask. My wife has non-income property in Springville and we do' pay taxes and utilities on it. We do not get to vote on the library bond but will be expected to pay for it if it passes. (Isn't that taxation without representation?) We also have family here, so with that and being be-ing a taxpayer, I feel like I'm entitled to an opinion. I am also Patrice Bolen's father fa-ther and where she is practical prac-tical I am radical. I am beginning to think that in a meeting somewhere some-where the proponents of the library bond decided that they would say to anyone any-one and everyone that does not want this huge monetary mon-etary undertaking, "You just don't understand," as Springville Herald 269 E. 400 South Springville, UT 84663 An edition of The Daily Herald a Lee Enterprises, Inc. I will be first to say that I don't understand who is going to pay for this. If some of the buyout money mon-ey is coming to Springville Spring-ville and I knew it for sure I might understand. I see street after street in Springville and Mapleton with "For Sale" signs in the front. The company that I work for just laid off close to 20 employees and I understand un-derstand 20 more are to follow. Most of these are young people with families and large houses they couldn't afford in the first place. How are they going to help pay for this bond? Are the city officials asleep? One thing I do understand under-stand and that is last Saturday Satur-day and Sunday I participated partici-pated by way of television in a General Conference in which men and women counseled us on the hard times that are upon us. (True, we aren't feeling it yet except those who are losing their homes and jobs.) No where did I note that building a large spacious spa-cious building was a wise thing to do at this time. When I get mail out of my mail box the only first class items are bills and Big may be better, but isn't always WISE! Editor: I was grateful to read Patrice Bolen's voice of reason letter in the newspaper news-paper last week. I have, with increasing concern, been reading the pamphlets pam-phlets and letters-to-the-edit or about the library bond. . What are we thinking? At a time when the economy econ-omy of the United States is in serious peril, citizens are losing their jobs, we have cut back on driving because of the price of gas, state budgets have had to be slashed because of tax shortfalls, people on fixed incomes are- in danger because of tax increases, in-creases, and planned retirement re-tirement funds have been decimated. Great Britain, France and Germany are trying desperately to stabilize sta-bilize their banks, and Springville is proposing that we increase our indebtedness in-debtedness by 9.8 MILLION MIL-LION DOLLARS! We are being told that it will only cost a few dollars a month but that is on top of huge tax increases last year and the unknown tax increases of the future because be-cause of the failed economy- No literature that I have read has addressed the increased costs to heat, cool, maintain and staff a library of that size and where the money will come from. The buy now, pay later lat-er mentality of the past addition it will be for this statements. All else is large city, and long overdue. The amounts of unsolicited current library is too small third class material. I then for the amount of people re-realize re-realize that the Internet siding in this area now. has had a huge effect on It will benefit all amity the personal mail that we members from pre-school, get. Just magazines, music CDs and as significant are letters from missionaries all over the world. Isn't the same thing happening hap-pening to libraries? I am currently reading a novel from the Internet. If I want to know more about something some-thing I look on the Internet. Inter-net. If I don't find it there I pop in a CD that is an encyclopedia. ency-clopedia. Just a few clicks and I've got my answer without leaving my chair. I used to take an older teenage grandson to the Springville Library as he didn't drive. I was really impressed until I found he was going there to play video games! In my opinion, if this bond is passed I'll know that the parable of the fool ish virgins is alive and well and is going to come and roost in good ole Spring- ville, Utah. Just my opin-ion-I told you I was radical. radi-cal. Mac Mathews Mapleton needs to be abolished. We need to SAVE for a big- ger library and THEN purchase it. If the Friends of the Springville Library will begin planning fund raisers, I will be glad to volunteer my time to work at them. Then, when we finally fi-nally raise the money, we can have a city-wide celebration cel-ebration in a library that was paid for BEFORE it was built. I have lived in my home in Springville for 30 years. Just like all of the citizens of Springville, we have had to cut back and there are luxuries that we cannot can-not afford. I CANNOT vote for a library that it's indebtedness indebted-ness in a time of crisis may worsen an already grim fi- nancial forecast. What a wonderful CD ROMs, movies, private study rooms, multi-purpose auditorium and a conference confer-ence room can be provided with the additional space a new building will allow. In addition to the wonderful won-derful new library will be a beautiful landscaped area with a creek as part of it, plus a playground area. So, let's get out there on Nov. 4 and vote YES for this new library our city so desperately needs for all of its citizens. Joan Arnold Springville Thanks for Editor: Citizens of the little tumble down town of An- atevka visited bpringvitte Jr. High School last week as students from Mapleton and Springville Jr. High Schools presented "FIDDLER "FID-DLER ON THE ROOF." And it was neat! Under the direction of Leslie Walker, choreogra- phy by Corrin Gleave, music mu-sic and tech by Erin Baily, assisted by many and a cast of a lot, the stage came alive. Did you know that in order to live in Anetevka, you had to be able to sing well, even if you were only 13 or 14 years of age? Well you did. And you had to be able to dance and keep time and the men had to shake and rock and roll. The boys were too young to rock. The Russians had to sing and dance, but no rockin'and rollin'. After the first night's performance, the excitement could be felt as the young people involved in the musical, and those attending, attend-ing, mingled outside of the schooL Everyone, actors and audience, had enjoyed the evening. Parents whose young people got involved in Fiddler were asked to help in some way. Costumes were made, scenery constructed, publicity happened and many other things. Thanks to everyone who got involved in this memorable memo-rable experience. The only down side is that there aren't more performances perfor-mances so more citizens could enjoy it. We appreciate the dedicated teachers in our schools who go the extra mile in educating the students in our community! The first was "Tradition." The sound, harmony, blend, intonation, -diction and everything ev-erything else was stunning. The audience was in awe and aught to have been. The music was beautiful.
