The Varsity Var-sity team is in sole position of 1st place heading into the state championships with their first game being played at home against Region 6's fourth seed, West High on Oct. 14th at 4 p.m. The Varsity team finished with . an overall regular season record of 13 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. With a two-point cushion at the top of the region standings, the Red Devils went into their final game with the second-place, and reigning 2007 4A champs, Orem Tigers, knowing that they only needed to split the points to secure se-cure its top position. With five minutes before the end of regular regu-lar time and down 0-1, junior See LADY RED DEVILS on page 9 Mapleton Elementary named a Blue Ribbon Schoolof the Nation Mapleton Elementary was named as a 2008 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School of the Nation by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. The No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools award distinguishes distin-guishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant sig-nificant progress in closing the achievement gap. For the past 26 years, this prestigious pres-tigious program has honored more than 5, 800 of America's most successful schools. In this new role, Warren said, "I have always recognized rec-ognized the great efforts Nebo District makes in providing an excellent education for their students. stu-dents. Nebo District is a great place and has been on the cutting edge of innovation as they have implemented new programs and' provided professional develop ment for teachers. The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, Sunday Concert Series to feature Ruth Ellis, Jnnilyn Anderson in Harmony On Sunday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. in the Grand Gallery of the Spring-, ville Art Museum, Harmony will perform in the Sunday Concert Series sponsored by the Springville Spring-ville Arts Commission. Their program pro-gram features wonderful numbers num-bers such as "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" from South Pacific and "On My Own" from Les Miserables. The group, Harmony, consists of two excellent sopranos, Ruth Ellis and Janilyn Anderson accompanied ac-companied by Norma Mitchell on the piano. ' Ellis was raised in Orem and at the age of 19 bought a one-way ticket to New York to pursue her education at the internationally internation-ally renowned conservatory, The Manhattan School of Music. The schools are selected based on one of two criteria: schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance to high levels on state tests; and schools whose students, regardless regard-less of background, achieve in the top 10 percent of their state on state tests or in the case of private schools in the top 10 percent per-cent of the nation on nationally-normed nationally-normed tests. GENERAL NEWS o le Used book sale at Springville Library The annual Fall Used Book Sale of the Friends of the Springville Library will be held Friday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the east porch of the library. li-brary. There will be lots of fiction, non-fiction, young adult and children's books for sale. All hardbacks will be $1, and all paperbacks will be 50 cents.
