Show Thursday, July 17, SPRINGVILLE HERALD 19 The Sixth Gear 2009 GMC Yukon Hybrid: Not your typical SUV - Daniel Souza STAFF WRITER Before I get going on this week's review of the loan-er loan-er GMC gave us, I must ask you to remember or learn the meaning of the word hybrid. "Something (as a power-plant, power-plant, vehicle, or electronic circuit) that has two different differ-ent types of components performing essentially the same function," describes Merriam-Webster online dictionary service. Now that I have laid out some foundation on what the word hybrid means, let me also share with you that the Yukon does a good job on fuel economy while housing a fully powered pow-ered V8 engine for all your towing needs. Indeed, the Yukon Hybrid Hy-brid is mostly unchanged from the gasoline-only models, with the exception of some exterior details, subtle interior styling and several functional modifications. modifi-cations. There is no difference differ-ence in passenger seating capacity, and towing and payload are highly competitive compet-itive with other non-hybrid SUVs in the segment. The Yukon Hybrid's vastly improved fuel economy econ-omy over gasoline-only siblings is due largely to a state-of-the-art hybrid system using GM's all-new all-new electrically variable transmission (EVT). Two-wheel-drive Yukon Hybrid Hy-brid models, for example, deliver 21 mpg in the city, a 50-percent improvement over their 5.3L non-hybrid siblings. And before you, the reader get outrageously mad about the not-so-high, Rius-like 60 mpg, keep in mind that not many hybrids hy-brids in the market can Are you prepared for an Leanne Ely CNC ..Natural disaster can strike at anytime. Hurricanes, Hur-ricanes, floods and other emergencies put people in distress and need. Having a plan can help eliminate some of that, especially if you've got the food and water part covered. No electricity means no cooking on the stovetop unless you have a gas range. Having a propane gas grill outside can help fill that void mine even has a couple of burners on it. Stash an extra can of propane in the garage and you're set for a little while anyway. Camping stoves work too. Here's my emergency pantry for my own house-hold- Water.. 1 gallon per day per person in your household for drinking and hygiene purposes. Nuts. A terrific snack that will offer a good mixture mix-ture of protein, fiber and healthy rats. Dried Fruits. Another healthy, nutrient dense food for quick energy. Canned Stuff. I have all kinds of beans - black, pinto, garbanzo, white beans and baked beans, too. Canned tuna, salmon, chicken and beef stew. Canned fruits, veggies (tomatoes (to-matoes and corn only, my crew can't stand anything else canned). An Extra Can Opener. Open-er. You just never know! Should your can opener mysteriously walk off, having a back up is important! impor-tant! Granola BarsMeal Replacement Bars. Good, concentrated nutrients. Dried Milk. No explanation expla-nation necessary. Dry Cereals. Just add milk (the reconstituted dry kind). Beef Jerky. A favorite favor-ite of my teenagers, it's also an emergency pantry staple. ; Remember to rotate your food and keep the tow a boat or a trailer as well as this Yukon did. Imagine a full-size SUV that offers 25- to 30-percent more combined city-highway city-highway fuel economy while also providing up to 6,200 pounds (2,812 kg) of usable towing capacity (2WD) and 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg) on 4WD models; 12,000 pounds (5,443 kg) GCWR and eight-passenger seating capacity. Making all this possible is GM's advanced EVT and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride energy storage stor-age system (ESS), which work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 gasoline gaso-line engine with active fuel management (AFM) and late intake valve closing clos-ing technology. GM's new hybrid system not only enables en-ables the Yukon to launch and drive up to 30 mph on electricity alone, it also allows al-lows the 6.0L V-8 engine to operate in its more economical eco-nomical V4 mode for longer lon-ger periods. Drivers of the new Yukon Yu-kon Hybrid will notice a longer front end, almost as if the hybrid wonder came with a factory-installed body kit. That is because along with active fuel management, the Yukon Hybrid uses specific aerodynamic aero-dynamic aids and reduced-mass reduced-mass components to help achieve EPA ratings of 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway for 2WD models. That compares with ratings of 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway for the smaller-displacement, smaller-displacement, less-powerful 5.3L base engine. With 4WD models, the fuel savings are equally impressive, with the Yukon Yu-kon Hybrid rated at 20 , mpg in both city and highway high-way driving. The 5.3L base oldest in front to be used first. If you see something ready to expire, use it up in a non-emergency situation situa-tion and remember to add that item to the shopping list. This way, you'll always al-ways have fresh supplies. That goes for the water, too. I also have chlorine bleach, flashlights, batteries, batter-ies, candles, matches, first aid kit, extra toiletries, a fire extinguisher and a radio ra-dio all in my laundry room cupboards, just in case they're needed. Last year, we created an emergency menu to help people stock their pantries with food they could make into meals. Here is a recipe from our first 911 Emergency Menu with emergency cooking notes, as well as the normal nor-mal cooking method: Linguini with Clam Sauce Serve 4-6 8 ounces linguini, uncooked un-cooked 2-3 (6-ounce) cans minced clams, undrained (I like a lot of clams, some like less) 1 (14.5-ounce) can low sodium chicken broth (or use equivalent chicken bouillon) 2-3 tablespoons butter (or 2-3 tablespoons olive oil) 2 cloves garlic, pressed 1 small onion, chopped (equals about 1 cup) (optional (op-tional in an emergency) 2 tablespoons flour 18 teaspoon dried thyme Dash of Tabasco sauce i """" 111 " 11 " l.H,,'....-Ui.UUi,UH c mKmi-- models are rated at 14 in the city and 19 on the highway. high-way. I must add however the Yukon did struggle a couple of times during the slow down leading to a full stop. Because the vehicle is programmed to shut its gas engine off during a stoplight, GMC's SUV seemed to 'gasp' while searching for a lower gear leading up to the engine shut off. That produced an uncomfortable uncom-fortable and unexpected jerk through the vehicle, ve-hicle, almost as if someone some-one pressed the brake to cancel cruise control but misjudged how close the brake pedal was placed. But overall the Yukon emergency? 14 cup fresh parsley, chopped (or use 1 tablespoon table-spoon dried parsley) 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional in an emergency or used bottled) bot-tled) Salt and pepper to taste Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, or use canned Parmesan) Prepare pasta according accord-ing to package directions. Drain. While pasta is cooking, drain the juice from the canned clams into 2 cup measure then add enough chicken broth to make 2 cups liquid. (or4use ALL chicken broth). In skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat and saute the onion and pressed garlic. Stir in flour. Cook on low for about 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in chicken broth, thyme and Tabasco sauce. Bring to a boil and simmer 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in clams, parsley and lemon juice and heat through. Add salt and pepper pep-per to taste. Serve over hot linguini and top each portion with as much cheese to your liking.
