No, Happy Valley hasn't been annexed by the Happiest Place on Earth. (Yet.) There is a little piece of the Disney magic right here in Springville, thanks to the holiday spirit of Widtfeldt. On every night of the week except Sundays, Sun-days, through Oct. 31, you can commune with the spirits of the Haunted Mansion simply by pulling up to the curb in front of Widtfeldt's home and tuning tun-ing your car radio to 106.7 FM. Widtfeldt has taken care of everything else. "I've always kind of been enamored of Halloween, since I was a kid," Widtfeldt Widt-feldt said. He remembers turning the front hallway in his parents' home into a spook alley for trick-or-treaters. So turning the entire street-facing exterior exte-rior of his own home into a three-dimensional companion com-panion piece to the Disney album "A Spooky Night in Disney's Haunted Mansion" Man-sion" is only his latest celebration cel-ebration of the season. Widtfeldt's festive display dis-play is like a drive-in movie mov-ie - you don't even get out of your car. All along the front of Widtfeldt's house, life-size (and life-like) models, mod-els, lighting and decorations decora-tions flash and sway while inn, .mlninln fi'lln Mt1n VALUE - 'i -jr.,, i' ,.rjiwf( fi Hi1! f-J't mwm in iff l?7 1 .3 i i.1 allows FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT in the home thn nkimiinl AkxlU. j i x! And there's a little bit less privacy for the family. "You walk out your own front door and there are 15 or 20 cars parked in front of the house and that's a little strange," she said. Because it's fun for her husband, however, and fun for the couple's three children, ages 5, 8 and 16, Kristine Widtfeldt plays along. "I just sort of close my eyes and wait until October Oc-tober is over," she said. Besides, other people love it. Kim Jepperson, a neighbor neigh-bor of the Widtfeldts and a stay-at-home mother of four, said that the whole neighborhood was excited to see the special Halloween Hallow-een display again this year. And she said that parents and children will both en-' joy the atmosphere. "It's a little bit spooky, a little bit funny, a really entertaining en-tertaining family activity," Jepperson said. A childhood nightmare come to life " It was Widtfeldt's parents par-ents who started all of this, when they gave their young son a copy of "The Haunted Mansion LP' (later (lat-er reissued as "A Spooky Night in Disney's Haunted Mansion"). The album, recorded re-corded in 1969, tells the story of two kids who seek shelter in the Haunted Mansion during a storm, with narration from Thurl Ravenscroft (the original voice of Frosted Flakes spokes-'toon Tony the Tiger Ti-ger and the performer of Winterization Check 29 Point Inspection i t i I ! "I wore the grooves out on that thing," Widtfeldt said. "I listened to the record re-cord over and over again." In 2005, he tracked down a cassette copy of the reissued reis-sued version at about the same time that he'd begun be-gun to fiddle" with Light-O-Rama, a home-display-lighting computer program popularized by the nationally nation-ally famous home Christmas Christ-mas lights display done by Ohio resident Carson Williams. Wil-liams. After copying the cassette to CD, he realized his cherished childhood memory was now compatible compat-ible with Light-O-Rama. "I kind of went, 'Wow, this would make a really cool Halloween display,' " Widtfeldt said. Already a habitual browser of day -after-Halloween sales at stores like Wal-Mart and Partyland, Widtfeldt had piles of seasonal sea-sonal decorations. He photographed pho-tographed the front of his home and then used Adobe PhotoShop to design his display. Then it was just a matter of getting every thing hung and stringing all of the lights. "The first time it was probably a good month spent on ladders," Widtfeldt Widt-feldt said, "and at least two weeks before that creating the audio track." Widtfeldt used computer software to "slice up" the recording and rearrange it Visit the Dreaded Grove For a haunting good time, you can visit the Dreaded Grove in Springville. Spring-ville. One of the things they mentioned is that money is the key issue is-sue in all things. If you're not making money, generally gen-erally speaking, nobody cares what you do." You'd think the neighbors neigh-bors might complain, but Widtfeldt solved the biggest big-gest potential problem by having his display be silent si-lent ... except in people's cars. "We don't hear a thing," said Jepperson. When the display went up for the first time, last year, she didn't even realize, at first, that her neighbor was up to anything different than his usual Halloween decorations. deco-rations. And Widtfeldt said, that streets are wide enough that traffic congestion hasn't been a problem. Kristine Widtfeldt said that the family has; gotten got-ten so much positive feedback that she almost didn't flinch at the thought of Halloween this year. Widtfeldt said that he probably won't keep doing do-ing the display indefinitely - but for now, he's happy to be passing out the coolest cool-est Halloween treat on the block. the display can be seen nightly from 7:30 tol0:30 p.m. (except.
