Show 20 SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, October 1 8, 2007 SMPPITTS Helen Beardall Springville has some very interesting homes. You should consider taking tak-ing a tour of the city and either walk the area or take a drive and view the different types of architecture, architec-ture, building materials, etc. that add such charm to our community. I will only list a few today, to-day, but there is a booklet book-let at the Springville Historical His-torical Society that can be yours for free if you will come and visit at 175 S. Main Street, downstairs. It is open on Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m. Come in and get acquainted. The historical society is housed in the old Carnegie Library building, which was built in 1922 with the assistance of a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie. Carn-egie. Be sure to observe the decorated ceramic tile mosaics that adorn this one and one-half story building. It is unique both in form and structure. The WoodHarrison home located at 310 S. 300 West, was constructed in two distinct sizes. The original section was built in 1853 and was a 24' by 14' one-story cabin of adobe ado-be brick. In 1877 George Harrison added a two-room two-room wide by one-room deep two-story addition to the east end. Note the door on the second floor. It is said that these types of doors on homes were added to enable furniture to be hoisted to a second floor living space, as the stairways and corners in stairways were just too narrow and steep to take furniture up to the next floor. Observe the huge pine tree in the front yard. I think it could tell a tale of two. The John Hafen home located at 1002 S. Main, east side of the road. Look up to see this very unusual home. Hafen and his wife, Thora, and their nine children were camped at Crandall Springs, just south of this home, because be-cause they could not find a house they could afford to rent. In 1902 Hafen was able to purchase the rocky hill from Myron Crandall with a painting. This home was designed by Swiss architect named Tazanga. Dr. George Smart sent patients who could not afford to pay the doctor to work on the Hafen home and in turn Hafen painted pictures for Smart. When it came time to install windows some of the small window panes in the house were made from discarded glass plate negatives from George Edward Anderson's photography pho-tography studios. Hafen became one of Springville's most noted artists with many of his pictures housed at the Springville Museum of Art and now worth thousands thou-sands of dollars., The William Bringhurst home located at 306 S. 200 West, was built in 1856. It still has the original plaster. plas-ter. Most window panes are original and the porch across the front of both stories is original. Brigham Young usually slept at this home the second night out from Salt Lake on his way to St. George. The walls of this home are 18-inches thick, which makes it a well-insulated building, protecting it both from the hear and cold. A charming home indeed. The Thomas R.' Kelly home located at 164 W. 200 South, was built in 1903-04. It was one of the first late-Victorian homes built in Springville. Note the two large handsome turrets and the bold facade fa-cade on the front. Most homes at that time were of Salt Box design. The street on which this home was built was known as Depot Street because it led to the Rio Grande train station. The father of Kelly was Joseph Kelly an early Springville pioneer who ran a ranch up Hobble Creek Canyon. After World War II the Kelly family sold the ranch to Springville City. It is now Kelly's Grove and the Hobble Hob-ble Creek Golf Course. Caffrey & DavisSenior Hotel & Billiard Hall locat ed at 296 S. Main is now a pizza business. This building build-ing was the first significant signifi-cant two-story commercial commer-cial building constructed on the 200 Main block and in the beginning housed a furniture store, from 1819-1907. 1819-1907. In 1907 it became the Robinson Brothers Piano Company. In 1921 it was sold to Laura Senior and in time was added onto becoming be-coming a hotel, restaurant and billiard hall. Stop and go inside and enjoy a piece of pizza as you observe the beautiful renovation work that was completed not too long ago in this building. You will be glad you took this opportunity. Take time to observe the wonderful buildings in this city and then encourage en-courage your families' to respect and help preserve these lovely old edifices.
