Docents taught the students several facts about the wild animals and even let the students hold and pet them. Nebo board approves plans for new district office building Brooke Barker STAFF WRITER With Nebo School District Dis-trict growing by approximately approxi-mately 1,000 students a year, the Spanish Fork district office seems to be shrinking. "There are just as many people in the halls during dur-ing our board meetings as there are in the actual ac-tual room," said Steve Maughan, Nebo's director of operations. "Our building build-ing is just not adequate for our board meetings." "We need a board room with enough space to put people," Maughan said. He also explained room for district employees is also becoming sparse in the building nine or 10 computer com-puter technicians share a room in the basement of the building. Copy rooms have ended up in office space and grant writers in closets, which he called inadequate. "There are just no nooks and crannies left," Maughan said. When the district office building opened in 1978, there were only 12,590 students stu-dents in the district, and in October 2006, there were 25,734. . In November 2006, Superintendent Su-perintendent Chris So-rensen So-rensen reviewed the need for a remodel to the district office during the board's work session, and said he felt like Landmark High School needed to be in a new facility before initiating initiat-ing the district office project. proj-ect. Before the meeting on Wednesday, the school district broke ground on the new Landmark High School at 606 S. Main St. in Spanish Fork. Maughan estimated the school would be done by February 2008. Nebo School District is simultaneously building three high schools. Salem Hills High in Salem should be finished by fall 2008, and Maple Mountain High between be-tween Mapleton and Spanish Span-ish Fork is scheduled for completion by fall 2009. Babbitt SPRINGVILLE HERALD After years of planning plan-ning and dreaming, Nebo School District officials broke ground on April 11 for a new building to house Landmark High School, the district's alternative high school. The two-story, 52,000-square-foot building will include 14 general classrooms, class-rooms, separate classrooms class-rooms for art, science and home economics, two computer labs, a large cafeteriagymnasium caf-eteriagymnasium area with bleacher seating for 396 and a large commons area. The school, which will cost about $7.6 million, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008. It is located at 606 S. Main in Spanish Fork. Nebo Superintendent Chris Sorensen said the new school shows district patrons the district's commitment com-mitment to serving all students, stu-dents, including those who need to follow a different path to succeed. Landmark provides extra ex-tra help for students who need it in order to graduate gradu-ate from high school. The school maintains a small number of students per teacher and creates a family-oriented', community atmosphere that aids many students, said Landmark Principal Joe Kelly. The approximately 300 students now attending Landmark have transferred trans-ferred there from the district's dis-trict's three high schools. About one third of Landmark's Land-mark's current students are from Springville High School, Kelly said. The school offers both day and evening programs. Kaye Westwood, a member mem-ber of the Nebo School District Dis-trict Board of Education, said when she joined the board about 14 years ago, board members knew they wanfed to provide a new facility for Landmark. The school is still in the same place and the building build-ing is no longer big enough to meet Landmark's needs, especially as the district's student population grows.
