Show Thursday, October 26, 2006 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 15 D MGsMD IUUS tCMF MM. HMMMMH Jr. High Students help with high school service project SJHS Scientist of the Month Springville High School makes a difference every year with its fund-raising and donations for Locks of Love and the Make a Wish Foundation. What you may not realize is that Springville Jr. High gets involved as well. Each year, student council members from the high school come to the jr. high to show the difference this fund-raiser is making and to allow jr. high students to participate. partic-ipate. Many students at the jr. high gave dollars on "give a dollar day". Some helped or attended the family carnival on Monday night. This year was different differ-ent because some girls at the high school decided to come to the jr. high and donate their hair to Locks of Love during the jr. high assembly. The emotional assembly assem-bly highlighted previous wishes that were granted grant-ed and explained what granting a wish can do for a sick child. All of the students watched as the girls allowed al-lowed student council members to cut off their braided hair for donation. Many of the students at the jr. high were motivated motivat-ed to give of themselves and are looking forward to next year when they can show their generosity generos-ity even more. Some girls have even begun to grow their hair in an effort to be more prepared for a hair cut next year. Thanks to the high school students for giving giv-ing us a great example of the spirit of generosity that can exist in a school setting. Mrs. Cms receives the Teacher in Excellence Award Karolyn Campbell 5JH5 STAFF WRITER Mrs. Caras is an awesome awe-some science teacher at Springville Jr. High, and has recently received the first "Teacher in Excellence" Excel-lence" award of the year, along with Mrs. Rice. Mrs. Caras has fun teaching Integrated Science Sci-ence to students in eighth grade and Earth Systems to ninth graders. This is her eleventh year of teaching teach-ing in the secondary school system. She has taught at SJHS since 2000. Mrs. Caras became a science sci-ence teacher because she loves teaching teens, and enjoys science. She says her dad is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at BYU, and she remembers him lying on his bed after work, correcting cor-recting papers and watching watch-ing sports on TV. She's followed in his footsteps as a teacher, and loves what she's doing "Science was not always easy for me, and yet I love it. I love those 'Aha!' moments mo-ments when things click. I want to provide those moments for my students, especially those who say they can't do science, or they don't understand it." Mrs. Caras loves reading read-ing good books, watching movies, and gardening. She loves the show "The Simpson's", and admits that she is addicted to the game "Zuma" right now. Mrs. Caras also loves her pets; she says that she's always had rocks and bird nests in her closet as a kid. She currently takes care of pet rats, pythons, dogs, and kitties at home. The "Teacher in Excellence" Excel-lence" award is given monthly from one teacher to another in recognition of all the hard work they do. Mrs. Caras say she is very excited about the award, and thinks that it's great positive reinforce ment for what teachers do. Since this is the first award of the year, it was given by Principal Kele-polo Kele-polo to Mrs. Caras and Mrs. Rice. They will have the opportunity to present pres-ent this award to another outstanding teacher next month. Let's all give a big round of applause for an amazing teacher, Mrs. Caras! Youth would be an ideal state if it came a little later in life. - Herbert Asquith Ryan Allen has been selected se-lected by Mr. Kindrick as the Scientist of the month for October at Springville Jr. High School.
