A new wish to grant after a wish come true XantheWebb SHS STAFF WRITER ' i On Friday, Oct. 20, Springville High School participated in its annual "Make A Wish" assembly. Last year over $8,000 was donated by students and the community, and a special spe-cial wish was received by Lauren Ostler of Springville Spring-ville and her family. We were able to see her wish granted on Friday by looking at the pictures of Lauren and her family at Walt Disney World. Little Lauren and her father Mr. Ostle, a respected and admired ad-mired teacher at SHS, had a f ev heartfelt words of thanks prepared for the audience. The overall atmosphere was warm and astounding. There were many instances instanc-es where the audience applauded ap-plauded and cheered. The 2006 Make a Wish assembly assem-bly allowed SHS students to feel pride for their service ser-vice and compassion. Glass jars labeled "Make A Wish" were passed around in classes from Monday through Friday last week. Students had multiple opportunities to donate spare change or charitable amounts, and many students were seen donating graciously mul tiple times. Monday, Oct. 23, was the Make A Wish Carnival that is held at Springville High every year. This is a day when the community has a chance to attend a family-fun family-fun game-night where the proceeds benefit the Make a Wish program. . This year SHS students were given an introduction to and information about our new "wish-maker." Thomas is a 17 year-old boy attending Orem High School. He is experiencing a relapse in Leukemia, and has been given the opportunity oppor-tunity to be Springville's "Make A Wish" recipient". The student audience shared a connection with Thomas when his two wish-ideas were read. Thomas has narrowed it down to either a shopping spree or a trip to meet the cast of the popular TV series se-ries Lost (in Hawaii), and the SHS students showed their approval of his possible pos-sible wishes. Participating in the Make a Wish program is a special tradition that SHS hopes to continue. We hope to show our community bonds with Thomas and his family, and we hope that they know that their caring neighbors in Springville are looking out for them. Katie Ashton STAFF WRITER Diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2001, Micah Grotegut said he thought he had the worst life out there, until he met an eight-year-old boy at Primary Children's Hospital. Pulling the IV stand around with him everywhere, every-where, feeling horrible about his situation, Grotegut Gro-tegut said his outlook on life changed when he met Seth. Seth had a tumor on his spine "the size of a Big Mac," said Grotegut, who's now tumor free. "Life was ugly for me in 2001. My life was the worst, I couldn't go anywhere any-where or do anything," he said, but after meeting Seth he realized his life wasn't the worst. Now, Grotegut embodies em-bodies the spirit of his high school and donates money from his after school job to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in hopes of helping others going through similar situations. situ-ations. "Make-A-Wish doesn't only provide a week to forget their sickness," it brings those who spend their days being poked and prodded with needles back to the world, he said. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children chil-dren with life-threatening medical conditions. Each year, the Springville Spring-ville High School Red Dev ils raise money to make one individual's dream come true, and this year they chose to grant the wish of an Orem High School student stu-dent who has suffered a Leukemia relapse. Last year, Springville High raised $8,500 for one their own. Teacher Brian PS lllli . "illillliii ..-.1 r? Ostler's daughter, Lauren, has cystic fibrosis and it was her dream to go to Disney World in Florida. Having her wish granted, grant-ed, Lauren came back to SHS to share her gratitude and some of her memories with students. "Thank you Springville High School for sending me and my family to Florida," Flor-ida," Lauren said to an auditorium au-ditorium of students. "I appreciate ap-preciate what you did for me and my family." This year's Make-A-Wish candidate hasn't de- cided on what his wish is, but has narrowed it down to two things: either meet the cast of "Lost," a popular popu-lar TV show, in Hawaii or go on a shopping spree. Carrying the spirit of giving giv-ing over to another notable charity, 72 girls, including includ-ing one boy, tied their hair back into various pony tail lengths and had their peers do the honors of snipping months of growth. For four years, students have been giving their pony tails to Locks of Love, and this year had the largest turn out. M a pALLOWEEM t Coach Jarvis even cut her hair off durring Make-A-Wish assembly.
