Show Comments Do we want totally open borders? Editor: At Provo's Independence Day Parade, I gathered signatures on a petition to Congress. The petition urged Congress to secure out borders against an invasion in-vasion of aliens crossing illegally into our nation. I had hoped that 9-11's tragedy had taught Americans Amer-icans a lesson, that we should protect our national borders from intrusion by some foreigners who mean our nation harm such as foreign terrorist organizations, organiza-tions, foreign espionage agents, AZTLAN revolutionaries, revolu-tionaries, Marxist subversives, subver-sives, felonious criminals, illegal narcotics smugglers, etc. Surprisingly many people peo-ple sneered at me. Some told me I was unfriendly to Mapleton Police report Mapleton Police had 58 calls from June 27 to July 4, with 17 of those for animal ani-mal problems. Several illegal fireworks were confiscated, and an UDOTkuuehes express lanes web site In preparation for the changing nature of Utahis carpool lanes, UDOT today launched ex-presslanes.utah.gov. ex-presslanes.utah.gov. The Web site is designed de-signed to help Utahns understand un-derstand how travelers along Interstate 15 will benefit from the conversion conver-sion to Express Lanes and learn how to receive notice of when the Express Ex-press Lane passes are available. "Our phone operators have received numerous numer-ous calls every day from people seeking more information in-formation about the Express Ex-press Lanes program," said John Njord, executive execu-tive director for UDOT. "Naturally, since these are Utahis first Express Lanes, curiosity, confusion confu-sion and misconceptions exist about how the new lanes will work. This new Web site should answer the majority of those questions ques-tions and prepare drivers for what to expect in the coming months." Should we do away with check points, fences and sensors and allow as many billions of people from foreign for-eign lands as wish to enter America to flood us in an unhampered immigration flood? Once all of earth's population popu-lation has arrived, will America be better off? Will those billions of immigrants be better off? Will the form of government, the form of economic system and the culture that made America free, prosperous and happy still exist? Bliss W. Beginning in August, up to 600 single-occupant vehicle drivers who are willing to pay $50 per month can acquire an official of-ficial Express Lane decal for their vehicles. In September, those motorists will be able to drive in the carpool lane. Carpoolers, buses, motorcycles mo-torcycles and clean fuel burning vehicles will still be able to drive in the lane for free. The carpool lanes are currently underutilized and average less than half the capacity (number (num-ber of cars per hour) they could handle normally. By permitting solo drivers driv-ers to purchase that excess ex-cess capacity, UDOT can decrease the travel times for drivers in the regular, general purpose lanes, without decreasing the travel times and value of carpooling. Granted, the World Folkfest reaches out on a small scale, but it is still bringing bring-ing people together with different cultures and helping them to get to know each other. I do not understand why people have to fight and wage, war on one another, and my guests from Poland say the same thing. They talk about World War II and the terrible ter-rible things that their people went through. They speak of recent times when they had to stand in lines to obtain a little bit of food. Not anymore. They say that they now have every kind of food available to them. They say that housing is expensive, and they do not yet have big, new houses as we have here, but things are good for them. They are proud of their families and of their country. coun-try. They like to visit here and elsewhere, but Poland is "home." We feel the same about our country. We took them to see the Olympic sites, and they were thrilled to have been there. They invited us to come to Poland so that they can show us their country. They will go home with a different opinion of what Americans are like, and we will know something of Poland Po-land and the Polish people. , We are different, and yet we are so alike. They have families they love; they work hard for a living; they love dancing and music; they want world peace. We agree with our guests that world peace could be achieved if people could just get to know one another, spend some time with each other and understand one another. Ss.
