Show SPRINGVILLE HERALD Thursday, July 6, 2006 He was everywhere, doing everything! : Springville is losing one of the great ones-Alan Curtis. Cur-tis. He is not going away, but he retired last week after many years of serving the youth and the citizens on this community in so many different ways. We know Alan will not go sit in his rocking chair. He will still be busy doing things, but it won't be the same. He has worked for both Springville City and Nebo School District for many years, and it is hard to name all of the programs and responsibilities he has been in charge of. There are few people in this area who went through any of the sports programs who didn't rub sholders with Alan. He has worked tirelessly arranging the youth sports programs, coaching and than taking care of the playing fields. If you were driving down the street, you probably passed Alan, in his truck, going somewhere, to do something some-thing else. It seemed he never went home and rested. He was always working, from mowing along 400 South to the freeway, to leveling the ballfield home plates, to setting up bleachers, to personally cleaning up the Arts Park after an event, to readying the canyon parks for visitors, or making sure everything was ok at the swimming swim-ming pooL Just some of the things I have observed him doing. Alan has worn too many hats the last few years while working for the city. It will be hard to get someone to do all things he was asked to do. Allan Curtis is a "worker bee." He leads, but he also gets right in there and does the work. The city and the school district will miss him. The young people will miss him, and the parents will miss him. Thanks Allan for all you have done for our youth and to keep the city running and beautiful! Protecting tk U.S.jkj Rex M. Rogers ' The most recent U.S. flag desecration amendment failed to pass in the U.S. Senate by one vote. It?s the fifth time such a measure mea-sure has failed in the Senate Sen-ate since 1990. The House of Representatives has approved ap-proved an amendment seven sev-en times in that period. Last week's 66-34 Senate vote did not strictly follow partisan lines with Republicans Repub-licans "for" and Democrats "against," but it was close. Only 14 Democrats voted for the amendment while three Republicans voted against it. But this issue is about much more than partisanship. par-tisanship. Flag desecration is an emotional issue because it is by definition a patriotic one. People tend to measure mea-sure one another's patriotism patrio-tism based upon how he or she views flag desecration laws. It's a game of "More patriotic than thou." On the one hand, "desecration" "des-ecration" is difficult to define. If the amendment passed, would I have to give up my U.S. flag golf club headcover? Is my headcover desecration or, as I intend, is it a patriotic expression? If the amendment passed would we need to rid our house of flag stickers, flag colored jewelry, flag decorated deco-rated clothing? Or is this not desecration but more patriotism? If burning a flag is desecration, than why are we instructed to burn flags when the material mate-rial wears out? On the other hand, while "desecration" may be difficult dif-ficult to define, everyone Springville Herald 269 E. 400 South Springville, UT 84663 An edition of The Daily Herald, a Pulitzer, Inc. A person burning a flag in violent vi-olent protest of the American Ameri-can nation or its policies is certainly recognizably different dif-ferent from a person burning burn-ing a flag to dispose of it. Still, one could argue that one person's desecration is another person's patriotic expression, however reprehensible rep-rehensible some of us may find this idea or its enactment. enact-ment. People burn or otherwise oth-erwise destroy U.S. flags (and other flags) because they want to say something. some-thing. They may be patriotic, patri-otic, just differently so. I recognize that people who oppose flag desecration desecra-tion laws or amendments may be as patriotic as I am. They're not opposed to such laws because they want to desecrate the flag. They oppose such laws because be-cause they want to protect freedom of expression and because they don?t know how these laws will be enforced en-forced in practice. I agree with their concern for how the law is written. Trie law must be clear so that enforcement can be reasonably applied. What we don't want is a flag version ver-sion of Prohibition, something some-thing that turns out to necessitate ne-cessitate an embarrassing repeal. Still, with aU that, I favor fa-vor flag desecration laws as long as they are properly prop-erly written, though I?m not sure a constitutional amendment is necessary. Congressmen have proposed pro-posed a constitutional amendment because the United States Supreme Court in recent years has struck down several state laws against flag desecration. desecra-tion. Editor: The United States of America has done a pretty good job of not warring with other nations since the Monroe Doctrine. We only flexed our muscles when some other nation punched us first. Then in June 1945, President Presi-dent Harry Truman signed us on with the United Nations. Na-tions. What a mistake! Within a few years the UN found that they had a lolly-pop (read sucker) on their hands. Since then we have been the major deep pocket book for the UN, the major supplier of men and arms, and money to help or try to rescue countries that like to squabble. What does the United States get in return? Nothing! Noth-ing! Oh, Yes! We got to build a multi-story building for them and allow their ambassadors to thumb their noses at the New York City police when they award the visitors with traffic violations. Some other nations are so jealous of our prosperity prosper-ity as a Republic, that they vote against us at most every ev-ery chance. For instance, here are some nations' that love us not: When the United States asked for a straight yes or no vote, the Arab League voted no 88.7 of the time, as did ASEAN members who voted no 84.5; African members voted no 83.8, Non-aligned Non-aligned members 82.7; the European Union said no 54.5 of the time. Don't you love it? Just open your pocket book, Uncle Sam! So it would appear that the US would have a difficult diffi-cult time trying to pass any no-nonsense propositions. But that is not all! The concept of open borders bor-ders and the destruction of America has long been the agenda of the radical left. Since the 1960s, a vast network, including many organizations and tens of thousands of grassroots activists ac-tivists backed by hundreds of millions of dollars from left wing foundations, has waged a sustained campaign cam-paign to open American's borders to mass migration from the Third World and the inundation of America. We are being overwhelmed over-whelmed by a tidal wave of illegal immigration. The campaign to radically radi-cally change American values and culture through mass immigration and the political mobilization of the alienated, presents a danger to the country that parallels the anti-American of the Islamic Jihad. The Demographic shifts caused by unregulated mass immigration immi-gration can have adverse impact on national stability that rival or surpass the effects ef-fects of war. Three Republicans voted against this proposal. The most appalling part to me was the deciding vote was cast by Senator Sena-tor Bob Bennett, Republican Repub-lican from Utah. Mexico pressures the U.S. to grant citizenship to millions mil-lions of undocumented Mexican immigrants, and demands humane treatment for its citizens who migrate legally or illegally, but it's very strict on its own immigration immi-gration laws and punishes punish-es very severely those who violate those laws. Mexico accepts only about 3,000 immigrants per year, and makes the screening process very difficult. 1 Central America illegal aliens are hunted down in bus and railroad stations sta-tions and fleabag hotels. At the same time it ignores the falling wage rates of many Americans, Amer-icans, the shrinking of the middle-class and the plight of much of the working class. A growing underclass under-class is one result.
