South Springville vt- 11 i n '. mm mm jm. t' -r f is Youth Councils collaborate on humanitarian project Nate Prawitt SHS STAFF WRITER Recently the news has been full of natural disaster stories, mudslides in southern south-ern Utah, flooding in southern south-ern California, and the most extreme, the tsunami in the India area. These disasters left many without their possessions pos-sessions or homeless and a huge burden on humanitarian humanitari-an organizations. As stories have faded from the news, the community has not forgotten. The Mapleton and Springville Youth City Councils Coun-cils collaborated in a humanitarian humani-tarian project to supply homeless and destitute families fami-lies with personal hygiene items. Many SHS students, lots of them also serving in school leadership positions, took some of their precious little free time to deliver flyers across the neighborhood, asking Springville and Suzanne Liu in semifinals for Presidential Scholarship Kim Clark SHS STAFF WRITER The Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest awards a high school senior can receive. One boy and one girl from each state, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, Co-lumbia, are awarded the prestigious prize. The winners are awarded a trip to'Washington D.C. to receive the Presidential Scholars medallion and will be able to participate in events and activities with their elected representatives, educators and other leading individuals in public life. Students are selected on the basis of superior academic academ-ic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. ac-tivities. Springville High School's own Suzanne Liu, daughter of De and Xiao xi Liu, is one of 2600 candidates. Picked 801 806 9500 or 800 -s " " s Mapleton residents to donate toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste, tooth-paste, floss, shampoo and other assorted items for the cause. Not only were the local residents res-idents involved, but local businesses were involved as well. Overall, the project was very successful. "It went great and we got a lot of stuff. We are really pleased about that," said Darci Ber-telsen, Ber-telsen, President of the Springville Youth City Council. Coun-cil. Also, as the President of the Mapleton Youth City Council, I would like to personally per-sonally thank all of those residents res-idents who so selflessly donated do-nated their time and resources, re-sources, as well as Trapnell Orthodontics and Dr. Soutas, DDS. The donated items will be taken to the Deseret Industries In-dustries Humanitarian Canter Can-ter to be distributed to needy people across the world. Thanks everybody! from the 2.8 million high school students who will be graduating in the year 2005, Liu's application was selected select-ed to go on to the semifinals. The group will be slimmed even more in April when another an-other cut will be made and only 500 student finalists will remain. Liu is a senior at SHS where she is involved in a number of activities. She is the concert master of the SHS Chamber Orchestra, and is constantly involved in things that help the orchestra and its members. Along with orchestra, Liu is taking many advanced courses in school, and she excels in all of them. She is also a member mem-ber of the 2004-05 Art Royalty. Royal-ty. Many students view Liu as extremely talented and hardworking. hard-working. Congratulations go to Liu on making it thus far, and we wish her good luck in the future rounds.
