Show Thursday, February 10, 2005 SPRINGVILLE HERALD 7 Chiropractic can help ease your foot problems Dr. Richard Olson D.C. In the previous article, we discussed the foot and how a chiropractor may help with the foot. In this article I would like to continue talking talk-ing about the foot, in particular particu-lar discuss pronation of the foot. Pronation is the word used to describe the action of the foot and ankle when our body weight is put on our foot. Probably the most notable change that occurs with Eagle Recognition Dinner Feb. 12 The Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Church at 52 N. Main Street in Springville. Guest speaker will be Rex Reeve. Cost is $8. Please wear your Scout uniform or Sunday Best. Eagles eat free. For more information infor-mation call 491-7020. pronation is the dropping of the inner arch of the foot. Pronation of the foot is necessary because it acts as a way to absorb a large amount of the shock that we would feel with each step of our feet. So, you could possibly say that pronation of the foot is our body's shock absorber. What happens when there is either too much or too little pronation? Using the analogy analo-gy that pronation of the feet is our shock absorber, too much pronation is similar to our body's shocks bottoming out. Too little pronation (supination) is like having too stiff shocks for our body. When shock absorbers are either bottoming out or too stiff, much of the shock experienced expe-rienced with each step of the foot is transferred to the frame, (too the rest of the body). Abnormal pronation can result in increased wear of the knees, the hip and the low back leading to an higher chance of suffering some form of arthritis in these joints. Over pronation is much more common than too little pronation because of the many hours that we spend on our feet. With excessive pronation we loose this absorption and the shock travels up our body to cause increased wear and tear on the joints of the body. Many times, one foot will pronate further than the other foot. This will cause the inner arch of one foot to drop further than the other. Because of the further drop of one arch, one foot functionally functional-ly acts as a longer leg than the other. This can lead to slight distortions throughout the body, such as a elevated shoulder or hip. Distortions in the body will also cause increase of wear and tear on joints in the body. Chiropractors will assess the motion of the joints of the foot and adust those that are fixated, thus allowing better motion. They will also often fit their patients with orthotics. Orthotics are used to correct abnormal pronation, prona-tion, and have been shown to help with relieving many of the conditions that have been caused by over pronation such as plantar fascitis (heel spurs), knee pain, hip pain, low back pain and others. Orthotics have also been tested and shown to increase neuromuscular control through out the body and increase sport performance, resulting in increased balance bal-ance and more efficient muscle mus-cle effort. We will continue further discussing the foot and types of shoes that will help for too much or too little pronation.
