I came away amazed at what good value the $5 ticket price is. The setting is calm and contemplative con-templative for this selection of objects from the Boston Museum Muse-um of Fine Arts, and the viewer view-er should be encouraged not only to learn more about Egyptian, Greek and Roman contributions to Western Civilization Civi-lization and by extension ,to modern culture worldwide, but to take advantage of any reasonable opportunity to visit vis-it the great museums of America, Amer-ica, Europe and the Near East, and the original sites around the Mediterranean. You will be impressed by the scale of the early artifacts; from the small delicate mace heads at the entrance, to the limestone doorjambs recovered recov-ered from the Tomb of Mehu, which were carved around 2500 B.C. Much Egyptian pottery pot-tery is also on display. Study the relief plaque of a swallow from a later period and marvel at the delightful representation of a bird that was reputed to accompany the mortal dead into the next phase of existence. The statuary is equally enchanting en-chanting with an emotion of the mysterious combined with a real solidarity in the way they occupy physical space. In the Greek section "Head of Isis" is very effectively lit, and "Torso of a Young God or Athlete" has in the past been conveniently damaged thus saving viewers and exhibition curators potential embarrassment embarrass-ment and controversy. Check out the small terra cotta "Aphrodite and Eros," and be suitably impressed by the room with the Black Figure Fig-ure and Red Figure ceramics. These alone are worth many miles of travel and we are so close. They also admitted that some secondary students fail to take testing seriously. Utah results re-sults closely mirror those in other oth-er states testing for graduation competency. Nebo's performance is as follows: fol-lows: 92.2 percent of the students stu-dents reached mastery in reading read-ing compared to 82.8 percent for the state; 79.6 percent passed in writing compared to 72.3 percent per-cent for the state; and 75.1 percent per-cent passed in mathematics compared to 67.0 percent for the state. The Romans seem to get short shrift, but then they were only imitating and exploiting ex-ploiting the Greeks weren't they? Notable is the carved bust, "Portrait of a Bearded Man." which is ancestor to many later romantic effigies. There is something very "Modern" about the look of this man from the distant past. . Now . on to Gallery 303 where student works are on display. How critical should we be of student work? Should strong, honest, critical reviews wait until the student enters a BFA program? Some students seek to be and are informally in-formally admitted to their profession pro-fession even before finishing their BFA and therefore should be subject to all the rigors rig-ors of the life of an artist. Nathan Neville is having his BFA final show in the narrow hallway of 303's almost ideal art space. His "Blood Brothers" Broth-ers" is a reasonably successful painting, but he also has a series se-ries of works utilizing drawn images that are less interesting. interest-ing. His "Visions of Emma" contains a well-produced likeness like-ness of a golden-haired child that seems remarkably familiar. famil-iar. But it is his treatment of hair that generally lets Neville down. "Uncommon Culture" by Corey Bowman makes excellent excel-lent use of the main gallery. There is something surreal as you enter and experience the repeated motif of small heads mounted around the walls and installed in the center, and all accompanied by a video program. pro-gram. A "must see," so drop in before or after you stop at BYU. Hopefully both these students stu-dents will continue to learn and mature into masterful artists with important ideas. FocalPomt Flash Photography by Michael Snelson PRESIDENT, SNELSON PHOTOCOLOR LAB When taking pictures of people peo-ple outdoors and when you move indoors for picture taking you will most likely want to use some kind of flash. The flash will fill in shadow areas on your subject's face when shooting shoot-ing outdoors and will give you the prop er amount of light when shooting indoors, provided you're close enough to your subject. Let's tackle outdoor flash photography pho-tography first. If the only kind of camera you use is some variation varia-tion of the "point-and-shoot" camera there is not much you can do to balance the outdoor ambient light with your flash. However when using your point-and-shoot camera outdoors out-doors to photograph people, as a general rule use your flash, especially es-pecially if your subject is in bright, contrasty light. The flash will serve to lighten eye sockets and eliminate some of the other harsh shadow areas the sun casts on the face. It's always better to find some shade or other oth-er diffused lighting for your subject so you don't get the harsh shadows in the first place. But even in the shade is best to continue to use your flash. If you use disposable cameras always al-ways buy one with a flash built in that can be manually turned "Honk! Jr." from the Broadway Junior Collection. Directed by Allyson Evans, musical director Jana Grass, produced by Gena Bertelsen and choreographed by Elise Hardman, this musical is a must see for every family. This charming musical is based on the Hans Christian Andersen's tale of "The Ugly Duckling." Rewritten in musical musi-cal form by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The main character Ugly finds himself discriminated against by family and neighbors neigh-bors because of his of his odd looks and the strange noise he makes when he talks. After being be-ing separated from his family, Ugly against all odds, flees from a famished Cat and discovers dis-covers his true destiny. His journeys take him far and wide as he meets two geese, a beautiful beau-tiful swan and a bullfrog. Ugly's mother Ida, lovingly searches for her lost child, because be-cause a mother's love is unconditional. uncon-ditional. This sweet story will warm your hearts and teach you the importance of tolerance and love. "Honk! Jr." will run Monday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, & 16. You will have to accept the fact that sometimes your background back-ground will be too dark or too light. When using an SLR camera with an accessory electronic flash you can modify your shutter speed andor flash unit to balance the background lighting with the lighting on your subject. However, this technique won't work with the "pop-up" flash units on some SLRs. You have to use an accessory ac-cessory flash unit that is fully adjustable. The pop-up flash is only as good as the built in units on point-and-shoot cameras. cam-eras. To balance your outdoor lighting with your flash, simply take a meter reading of the background light, set your shutter speed so it will synchronize syn-chronize with your flash (see your manual, this is very important), im-portant), set your aperture to the setting needed for correct exposure on the background based on what your meter and set your flash to the same f number (aperture) as you just set your camera. By doing this your background and subject will both be exposed correctly. As mentioned above it is vital that when using a flash on an SLR camera you set the shutter speed to correctly synchronize with your flash. Because most 35mm SLRs have a focal-plane shutter that sweeps across your film plane that sync speed is 1125 or 160 of a second or slower. slow-er. If you set the shutter speed too high you'll only get a partial picture. Please be aware that most consumer grade electronic flash : . . i " .V i lyiilBllllip;lliii - . . Don't get too far away from your intended subject or you will not get a properly exposed ex-posed picture and don't even try to use a flash in a large auditorium auditori-um or sports arena, the only thing that your flash will light up is the guy's head in front of you. It is always a good idea, when possible, to move your subject away from a background wall at least six feet. If you subject is close to a background the flash will create a distracting shadow. Another technique is to use bounce flash. That is aim your flash unit at a low, white ceiling in the general direction of your subject and bounce the light off the ceiling. This creates a diffused dif-fused light source. However, this bounce technique won't work if you're in a room with high ceilings. There are many kinds of accessory ac-cessory flash units available, some with more power; some dedicated to your camera, some automatic some manual. Shop around for a good high powered, pow-ered, automatic flash that can be operated manually or automatically. automati-cally. Good luck with your photography photog-raphy this week.
