"Secret Garden" at SCERA SM While Frances Hodgson Burnett's Bur-nett's beloved novel "The Secret Se-cret Garden" has been a beloved and popular story for nearly a century, it will get energetic en-ergetic new treatment July 9-23 9-23 when the classic story of a 10-year-old orphan's search for friendship unfolds on the SCERA Shell outdoor stage in Orem. Performances will begin at 8 p.m. and tickets are available weekdays at the SCERA Arts Center (745 S. State St., Orem) or by calling 225-2569. Neal Johnson is directing the musical with continual movement move-ment and energy and placing it within an art deco set designed by resident artistic director David Whitlock. Mary Lennox's journey for love ano her quest to understand under-stand the past in her lonely uncle-guardian's locked garden has been seen on stage, movies, radio and television. Here it will get a fresh adaptation adapta-tion with music framed against the traditional American musi cal. Johnson, who says he loves the play, first directed it at American Fork High School, where he teaches theater. "A representative from the SCERA came to see it and told me it was the first time they had really cared about the characters at the end," he says. It wasn't long before he was asked to direct the same play for the Shell season. "The message of the show deals with rebirth and that kind of changes people can make when they rely on each other," he explains. "I thought this was an ideal theme for my high school students.. It is also a beautiful tale of repentance and growth I think will appeal to a SCERA family audience. "We are trying to make those themes evident, and so I have directed the emphasis to have a humanistic side," he adds. While Johnson is pleased with his cast, he says finding parts became a challenge. "I'm glad we have so many talented people in this area because we had to cast some' parts three times. All the reasons for leaving leav-ing were legitimate: a couple of the men required surgery, another is in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and is needed need-ed right now for some recordings, record-ings, and a couple of guys were transferred in their jobs. It's been quite the process, but the people we have are very good and I'm happy with them." "The Secret Garden" stars include Joel Gillespie, Cindy Winkel, Tony Winkel, Marissa Smith and Jordan Allen. Assisting Johnson are Kori-anne Kori-anne Ort on-Johnson as music director and Melanie Ahlborn as assistant director. Johnson, a musictheaterdance graduate gradu-ate from BYU is also doing the choreography. Additional information about "The Secret Garden" is available through the SCERA, 226-2569.
